5.0 out of 5 stars Great Band, Great Album 16 April 2012
Format:Audio CD
From a post-pub beer induced stupor, flat out on the couch, I stirred one late friday night to find the grainy black & white video for 'Bed Of Roses' flickering through the darkness and cigarette haze of my mum's front room; the TV, still on, pumping out a unique guitar and haunting vocal sound that instantly captivated the senses - I was blown away! That was 21 years ago now, and the night I discovered The Screaming Trees. I made haste to the local OUR PRICE first thing the following afternoon to make enquiries!

'Uncle Anesthesia' brought the band to a wider audience in '91 with the success of the single 'Bed of Roses' (though it wasn't until the following album, 'Sweet Oblivion', that they began to filter more into the mainstream consciousness). It's all good here: a mix of layed back and fast paced rockers that melt in the ears with a production vibe that adds a mellow sheen to everything. Chris Cornell of Soundgarden co-produces, lends backing vocals to several songs, and even plays the recorder on one! You don't here that often! In fact it's not easy to pin down their sound, except, perhaps, to say it's alternative rock that's at once infused with folk, '60s psychadelia and even elements of punk - (particularly on their earlier recordings). And although shamefully overlooked, their's was a sound that stood on it's own and was something more than grunge really, despite being labelled as such at the time. Stand out tracks, for me, are: Bed Of Roses, Alice Said, Something About Today, Caught Between - well, they're all outstanding. I have to say, though, that this is a pivotal album that marks what I'd call "the second half of their career".

5.0 out of 5 stars love it 18 Dec 2005
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
As with most screaming trees albums, this took a while to reveal itself. Largely due to the beautiful but slightly plodding first half. 'Beyond this Horizon' is an awesome opener with a great amp feedback thunderstorm at the end. The next few songs are good but the album kcks into gear with 'Before we arise' and then my three favourite songs on the album play all in a row; 'something about today', 'Alice said' and 'Time for light'. The music is almost an aggressive yet subtle rock. Mark Lanegans vocals increasingly maturing and sounding crisp and haunting. I have no idea why people keep talking about the mixing (!?). Personally all I can presume is that they are referring to the very reverberant echoey sound at times, appart from that this is my 3rd favourite Trees album and I would definately recommend it as a great, diverse rock album from a legendary if over-looked 'grunge-era' band.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 22 Feb 2014

Great band, real welcome blast from the past, this material still holds up now especially in the seemingly barren music landscape that we currently have, just as good music always does

Screaming Trees have been around for a long time now, and in my opinion Uncle Anethesia is one of the best out of all the excellent cds they have brought out. The band play together with astonishing ease. This should be your next purchase without a doubt.
