Amazon.co.uk Review

Is this a big-tent revival? A funky throwdown? A jam-band juggernaut? Unclassified is all that, and so much more. The story of Robert Randolph is Hollywood-issue: kid from the gritty Jersey streets is saved from the bad life by playing steel guitar in a House of God Church. Of course, it wouldn't mean a thing if the guy couldn't play, but he can really tear it up. By updating the sacred-steel tradition with heavy doses of blues, funk, and rock, he's not only emerged with his own sound, but he's brought the music full circle, returning those pop-music styles to their gospel roots. The disc reaches some terrific heights from the very start with a fiery trio of opening songs: "Going in the Right Direction," "I Need More Love," and "Nobody" are joyous, uplifting romps brimming with the fervour of gospel music. Four instrumentals show the breadth of the sound, from the country-tinged "Squeeze" to the modal and slightly spaced-out "Calypso" to the scorching gospel-in! fused closer "Run for Your Life." A couple of the slower tunes impede the album's momentum, but at its best Unclassified comes awfully close to capturing the intensity of the Family Band's live shows--which is no small feat indeed. --Marc Greilsamer

Product Description

(2003 'Dare Records')(47:49/11) Nach seinem mitreißenden Livealbum ist diese CD eher harte Kost. Eine eigenwillige Mixtur aus Rock, Funk und Soul, lange nicht so leicht zugänglich wie der Vorgänger / Compared to the live album, this is pretty tough stuff, a unique mix of rock, soul, and funk. ROBERT RANDOLPH - pedal steel gtr/voc, JOHN GINTY - Hammond B3, DANYEL MORGAN - bass/voc, MARCUS RANDOLPH - drums.

i had only heard robert randolph on jules holland but was so impressed i decided to buy the album. when the 1st song started i wondered what the hell i'd bought, but when it kicks in with the funky guitar riff a smile soon appeared on my face. this album is perfect for listening to on your discman as you walk because you will notice yourslef strutting along to the many funky beats. if you close your eyes you will wish to be on stage jamming with the band. word of warning - don't listen to this album on public transport because you will be smiling so much people will start to stare! a must buy.

Very satisfying buy. I also saw the band on the Jools Holland show and bought the album and the live one (which is also pretty good!) the next day. Not really much to add except that I'm surprised that people are criticising 'Smile' which is an excellent song, maybe my favourite on the album. Blues is not about playing fast all the time - even Hendrix used to play the slow blues as well as the fast stuff, let alone the original bluesmen. It shows a range of quality which promises good things ahead. There's nothing wrong with some 'mainstream' style songs, especially when they are considerably better than the norm.

After seeing Randolph and the Family Band on the last night of Clapton's tour in the Royal Albert Hall I had to buy this CD to see if the studio versions were as good as the live ones. Never the same but certainly not disappointed, this is a great album. An ecclectic mix of gospel, blues, funk, soul, jazz and the kitchen sink thrown in for good measure. Is he the next Hendrix? Well, boy can this guy play, I mean really play. The vocals and lyrics are strong and his cousin's voice (the bass player) sounds like it should come from a beehived 1960's female singer, not a huge 6ft plus man; tuneful, soulful and sounding perfect for the riffs and bass lines drifting past your ears. My 15 year old son thinks this is great also, not many bands can bridge the age gap today. Put it on, play it LOUD!
