Product Description

Product Description

Skycaptain Edward Valens is running short on second chances. Tricked by shady clients, nearly burned alive along with his skyship and now imprisoned in the Tower of London, it seems likely he'll end this rather inauspicious day swinging by his neck from the bottom of great sky city. His only chance at survival is to accept a seemingly suicidal mission from London's sinister Gearmasters; to venture into uncharted skies in search of an ancient city, to bring back the lost secret to controlling the sky cities.

On his journey he will encounter a cast of characters who each seem to delight in his misfortune, from corrupt constabulary officers to a devious pirate queen, from a shadowy Smog-blighted treasure hunter to an ageless girl with a heart of clockwork.

Into Uncharted Skies is a swashbuckling sky pirate adventure played out above a world of floating clockwork cities, tumultuous airborne trading ports and ancient lost ruins, where the ravenous Smog has enveloped the very earth and stretches now towards the skies.

A most gratifying read dashed with daring and do! This was a really fun book with plenty going on, it had pace and rhythm. Just as you're starting to wonder when the next event will happen it catches you off your guard.
The book sees a bunch of almost pantomime pirates whisked off on an incredible adventure. At times I felt it was reminiscent of the mortal engine series (definitely not a bad thing) but the author kept on course and this story has plenty unique elements to it.
I would recommend this to any fantasy fiction fans in a heartbeat, there are undertones of Pratchett humour which I loved!
I also think this would be really good for reading to kids, sometimes the themes are a little adult but nothing too serious by todays standards.
All in all a fantastic read and well worth the purchase!

5.0 out of 5 stars A tale of clockworked friends and foes with a dash of heroic piracy... 14 Aug 2014

Being a long time fan of hard and fantasy science-fiction, I've started to delve into the genre of steam-punk.
The author's grasp of the craft is pronounced throughout the entire work. Plenty of nail-biting buccaneering with a proper dose of good humor reminiscent of an infamous Disney pirate, the story weaves the lives of the down-on-their-luck characters with those facing insurmountable odds and ruthless villains in wonderful tale of swashbuckling, clockwork flavored steam-punk.

For those new the genre, I would highly recommend this as a gateway into the genre, while those who are more familiar with the underpinnings of steam-punk may find this a exciting dash away from the darker side of the genre.
