When did they have the meeting that decided that a cardboard slip case was 1) a good idea and 2) in some way deluxe? They never invited me. It's just bloody irritating. It always ends up torn and if the intention is to 'protect' the jewel case, well that's just stupid. As for deluxe, give me a break. It's a bit cardboard.

Anyway, back to the album. Gillan best ofs are actually a bit of a rarity compared to other offshoots of the Deep Purple family. There was the "What I Did On My Vacation" back in 1986 and the "Trouble" budget compilation in 1993 but bar imports that was pretty much your lot. But with the 2007 mass splurge of reissued Gillan albums, it's not surprising to see the issue of a new best of. Unlike "...Vacation" it sticks resolutely to the 1976 - 1982 Ian Gillan Band / Gillan material, so no Ian Gillan or Gillan / Glover material here. Which is sort of bad news that is more than adequately compensated for by seven tracks from the eternally underrated Ian Gillan Band years. Yes, I am one of those people who gets considerably more excited by the live version of 'Mercury High' than by the opening salvo of 'Trouble' and 'New Orleans'.

Even better, it's a 2CD affair, so you're getting 31 tracks of sometimes brilliant material for your money. And as a seven quid budget line release, you have absolutely no excuse for not buying it. It's not chronologically sequenced so the transition from IGB to Gillan material can be a bit odd but in the days of iPod shuffles it probably matters less. One of my other bugbears about compilations is a lack of a simple track listing with the origins of the track right slap bang next to it.

A trip down memory lane and a great addition. I love his less commercial stuff, but am really glad to have a full selection of most notable Gillan material. Good purchase.

I'm just about old enough to have enjoyed Gillan first time around, but not quite enough of an old man to have been into Deep Purple. Rediscovering this album has been a fantastic trip down memory lane, bringing back thoughts of dodgy sleeveless denim jackets full of patches and embroidered logos; and school discos hanging around with my uncool mates until the decent records were played by Mr Andrews and we could get into a circle for some headbanging. I still can't quite believe I got girlfriends back then, looking back.
Now I'm a responsible Dad with a proper job those days have gone, but the speed-riffing, the keyboard-driven twin-lead guitar metal tracks and the epic, self-indulgent political numbers are a wonderful throwback to the best things about early 80's rock.
Buy. This. Album.

Best Of Gillan 12 May 2013

This looks like a really good collection except for one big omission, the collection is called Unchain Your Brain-The Best Of Gillan '76-'82, where is the song Unchain Your Brain? That song is the most essential of all his solo tracks, this is why I gave it only 4 stars instead of 5. I am not sure who makes Gillan's compilations, but they must be braindead, not one of his proper collections has that song on it,oh well...it means you need Glory Road too...I would think most people who bought this collection, already bought it,if not, that is the album that contains Unchain Your Brain,it is a must for any fan of Gillan's solo albums. I suspect anyone not reading the tracklist of Unchain Your Brain: The Best of Gillan '76-'82 would have assumed the song Unchain Your Brain would have been included,I guess that's why one should never assume,This best of is still a good purchase,it is very good except for that omission,so good purchase along with Glory Road as well, those 2 together should satisfy most fans of Gillan's solo stuff...
UNBELIEVABLE 5 April 2013

I have been wanting to get my hands on a compilation Cd by the Ian Gillan Band for a long time and at last i have found a copy. This certainly fits the bill. This is a complete history of various musical styles and its definitely not boring. It ranges from bluesey rock with let it slide, and the NWBHM tracks of Vengeance and Roller. Ian gillan is one of the best hard rock / metal vocalists of all time. The stand out tracks are
Restless
Mutually assured destruction
Living for the city
for your dreams
Vengeance
Bite the bullet
Nightmare
Dont want the truth
Mr Universe
Bluesy Blue Sea ( very Black Sabbath ironic as this was recorded in 1982 a year before he joined the Band )
Let it slide
Sunbeam
Roller
Child in Time ( alternative version to Deep Purple )
I highly recommend this to anybody who admires the great vocal range of the Maestro Ian Gillan you will not be disappointed

If you're looking for Ian Gillan's solo work, I would heavily suggest this CD. I still rate Ian Gillan as one of the best Rock and Roll singers of all time.
