3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty and light hearted but not essential., 2 Nov 2008

Mike Choi's art is very pretty and suits the story perfectly. As for the story it is a bit filler. Wolverine, Colossus and Nightcrawler are in russia and get waylaid by omega red while in san francisco a mutants start becoming hippy folk in a mass illusion. I am sure that plot synopsis will give you a slightly negative view on this collection, perhaps rightly so. It IS filler and just as disposable, its just well written filler.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strong on character development., 6 Jul 2009

If you're a dedicated X-Men follower then this is a book that you're going to want to read. Standing alone there better stories to check out, like Messiah CompleX or the X-23 books, but if you want the full story then you'll love this brief book. Michael Choi's art is beautiful to behold, crisp and clear in a way that puts so many artists to shame. The story itself follows on from an action epic and as such is a more sedate affair, but that's the nature of serialised storytelling. If all these characters ever did was punch things then these stories would only be fit for 5 year olds to read, but luckily we have stories like this that expand upon the relationship between Scott and Emma, stories that sow the seeds for plotlines that Matt Fraction will later pick up on.
This sort of book is EVERYTHING that 90s X-Men should have been. The glimpses of characters that we want to know more about aren't left dangling, they're put there to build up to the stories ahead. They're not stumbling from one epic crossover to another, relationships are fleshed out so that we invest our emotions in these characters.
This is a brief book with a lot of character, definitely not 'filler', unless you expect Wolverine to go into a berserker rage on every panel.

2.0 out of 5 stars One of the poorer X-Men stories recently and a disappointing follow on from Messiah CompleX, 20 May 2009
By Kevin Allan "Dante86dmc" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

The events of Messiah CompleX changed the X-Men universe forever and was an excellent story. This story follows on almost directly from Messiah CompleX. Unfortunately it doesn't match that story in quality, premise or execution.

The story is very weak, uninteresting and ultimately not an essential X-Men purchase. While the art is fairly decent for the most part and there is the return of an interesting villain, the story just doesn't feel necessary and doesn't matter in the long run.

For those collecting the entire run of Uncanny X-Men, it will be necessary to buy but ultimately forgettable. For newcomers looking to get into X-Men- avoid this and pick up Whedon's Astonishing X-Men instead.
