Biography

Emerging in 1966, Canned Heat was founded by blues historians and record collectors Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson and Bob "The Bear" Hite. They gained international attention and secured their niche in the pages of rock 'n roll history with their performances at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival (along with Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and The Who) and the headlining slot at the ... 5.0 out of 5 stars UNCANNED IS LIKE UNEARTHING BURIED TREASURE 23 Jan 2008
By HAAKIE
Format:Audio CD
This GREAT "CANNED HEAT" CD starts with the 7 MINUTE & 5 seconds demo of "ON THE ROAD AGAIN" recorded on 17th & 18th April 1967 a year & half before the later version was in the charts worldwide.
"NINE BELOW ZERO" & "TV MAMA" Also from 17th & 18th April 1967 showing "Alan Blind Owl Wilson" talents in many ways but mainly Harmonica it's that good "Bob The Bear Hite" says "Do it again"
The next tracks are Classics like ROLLIN'& TUMBLIN'- BULLFROG BLUES - EVIL IS GOIN ON - The Classic GOIN DOWN SLOW - DUST MY BROOM & HELP ME (Alan Wilson's haunting voice singing Sonny Boy Williamson's Help me darlin I can't do it by myself.
The next 7 tracks are from archives recorded on the 17th & 18th October 1967. MEAN OLD WORLD the Little Walter Classic is my favorite Alan Blind Owl Wilson's Vocals & Harmonica are surreal.GOTTA BOOGIE (The WORLD BOOGIE) is a different mix to The BOOGIE released version on "BOOGIE WITH CANNED HEAT
Cd 1 ends with Classic MY CRIME & ON THE ROAD AGAIN full length mixes from LP.
CD 2 starts with 3 classics from BOOGIE WITH CANNED HEAT & then unreleased tracks "TERRAPLANE BLUES" The ROBERT JOHNSON CLASSIC (Great Slide Guitar instrumental)& The FULL 7 MINUTE & 34 second version of "CHRISTMAS BLUES"
Next are 2 Alan Blind Owl Wilson vocal tracks GOIN UP THE COUNTRY & TIME WAS & 3 Bob The Bear Hite tracks Low Down unreleased then SAME ALL OVER & BIG FAT. NOW IT'S JOHN LEE HOOKER & CANNED HEAT "IT'S ALL RIGHT" This was the Single & not released on HOOKER & HEAT GREAT LP.
You might buy this CD for Just that Track I did & ended up with extras like LITTLE RICHARD & CANNED HEAT on "ROCKIN' WITH THE KING" The FULL LENGTH VERSION OF "HUMAN CONDITION" 5 MINUTES & 24 SECONDS OF PURE CANNED HEAT BOOGIE & The FULL 3 MINUTE & 24 Second mix of "POOR MOON" I LOVE THIS SONG!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Should have been warmer still... 14 Jan 2010
Format:Audio CD
There have been many Canned Heat compilations issued on CD but none that I have seen have ever struck the right balance when it comes to cherry-picking their best material - which is strange given that the 'glory years' of this hard-working band cover a relatively short timespan from 1968 until the death of co-founder and principle songwriter Alan 'Blind Owl' Wilson in Sept. 1970. Granted, they did shoe-horn no less than six albums into this period but given that this is a double CD set there are still one or two surprising omissions along with too many unnecessary inclusions which ultimately thwarts this release's chances of being the compilation to beat.
First of all, there is an over-representation of their self-titled first album from 1967 which, to be honest, always sounded a bit weedy to these ears and lacked both the fire and the chops which were hallmarks of subsequent releases (they were better served by the live footage from Monterey, a festival appearance that helped to expose them to a wider record-buying public). There are also a smattering of contemporaneous cuts that didn't make the album which are of relatively little interest when there is a better case for including, say, some choice live cuts from the years that followed.
The second LP (and the first with long-time drummer and keeper of the flame, Fito De La Parra) from the following year, 'Boogie With Canned Heat' was a dramatic improvement and, along with 'Future Blues' from 1970, is the most consistent album they did. To be honest, the album's better cuts like 'On The Road Again' and 'Amphetamine Annie' are here, and, thankfully, the over-long solofest 'Fried Hockey Boogie' isn't.

5.0 out of 5 stars Uncanned - The Best Of Canned Heat 9 Sep 2013
Format:Audio CD
This is the best (current) compilation of Canned Heat. This 2 CD set has most of the best tracks from their classic period between 1967 to 1971.
The influence Alan Wilson had on the band with his slide guitar and amazing harmonica work is the highlight to me. The best songs are the ones that have Wilsons blazing harmonica work such as On The Road Again, Sugar Bee, Fannie Mae, The Owl Song and my favourite Canned Heat song Help Me with the most emotional harmonica solo I have heard.
This compilation includes some rarities such as Terraplane Blues and a few early demos from 1967. Also included are some promos advertising some early Heat albums.
The booklet is great, lots of good reading and a well compiled discography as well.
Overall this is a great set of most of the best moments from Canned Heat 1967 to 1971
Their later work is very different but still rooted into the blues.
