2.0 out of 5 stars Not one to excite! 18 Mar 2013
By Eli

I read this book a few weeks ago, and I barely remember it at all, except that I was disappointed. It was just an ok attempt at HR to be honest; although the "party" scene was rather good.

Basically our hero (who I can't even remember the name of!) wants a collection of weapons varying from swords, to knives, to spears. He has some issues with his father and older brother, who are both deceased. He's been away from England for quite a long time, and when he comes back, it's to realise that the person he left in charge has been taken ill, and the guy's daughter has been managing his affairs instead.

Over the next few months the heroine, Chloe, realises she's falling/fallen in love with him and so resigns. Our hero follows her to London in the hope of tempting her back and also for her aid in gaining possesion of a unique spear. She agrees to help find it, and then along the road they fall in love.

It had so much potential, but just fell flat. I finished it & put it directly in the pile for taking to the charity shop, it certainly is not a book I will read again. It was my first Ms Marlowe book, and I probably wont buy another.

UNBUTTONING MISS HARDWICK by Deb Marlowe is a fast paced historical romance set in Regency England.Chloe Hardwick is a proper, spinster or so her employer thinks with secrets and a multitude of buttons on her clothing. Braedon, the Marquess of Marland, has a cold detachment toward her and sees her only as his efficient assistant until she leaves. Braedon must on to London, and find her. What he find is the true Miss Hardwick. She is not only efficient, but beautiful, passionate, and the one he longs for,and would love to unbutton every one of those dare buttons, she used to protect herself. Together they find love, romance, passion, and a desire neither can avoid. A fast paced story that will have you longing along with Braedon and Miss Hardwick. Ms. Marlowe not only pulls the reader into the story she also delivers a well laid out story between her characters that readers will enjoy. 5.0 out of 5 stars unbuttoning romance 18 Jun 2012
By readerx - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Deb Marlowe never fails to write the most romantic historical romances in Romancelandia.

Chloe Hardwick is a layered, nuanced character whose problems with the Marquess of Marland's stumbling pursuit are real and deep and not solvable by a simple heart-to-heart. I loved that. Chloe is a strong, resilient woman in an uncertain situation, her circumstances in flux; the mix of her inherent strength of character and the shifting sand of her circumstances kept me enthralled. She is a character who rings true on every page.

Braedon, the Marquess, is equally layered. He's a true Alpha male: flawed, angry, and confused by his need for Chloe. He's a hero to melt any heart.

The writing is superb, full of passion and playfulness. "No, the Earl of Conover was in his element---and he looked elementally interested in Hardwick." I love word play, turning a word around and around, all the nuanced meanings played with.

Romantic. Nuanced. Joyful. Three words for Unbuttoning Miss Hardwick. I real pleasure of a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot, hunky hero and a fast pace. 25 May 2012
By S. Woodhouse - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Firstly, the cover of this book really caught my attention. Could there be a more intriguing title? Inside, it only gets better. Chloe is a weapons expert, Braedon a collector. While he has been overseas serving in the British army, Chloe (aka Hardwick) has taken over her sick father's duties of acquiring exotic weapons for Braedon, the uber-hunky Marquess of Marland.

The pace is lively, the characters entirely original. Braedon is a fabulous hero, sweetly clueless about himself and his internal motivations while entirely macho on the outside. He calls her Hardwick for at least the first half of the book, and only when it is too late does he realize he has fallen deeply in love with his very competent assistant.

Chloe is a firecracker, and she doesn't let him get away with a thing. When he begins to take her for granted, she simply moves on, shedding her Hardwick persona for satin and lace. It is marvelous to watch how his jaw drops, and how the second half of the book unfolds. I won't recap the plot; doubtless that's been done elsewhere. But this is a fast paced, passionate read that once begun simply cannot be put down.
