Book Description

Tommy Porter, came into this world whilst the Second World War was in full flow. The Porter family, was a large and well respected family that lived in the tough, poverty stricken docks area of Bootle, Liverpool.

Times were hard for Tommy and his eleven brothers and sisters, as they were for many families of that time and poverty was rife. Despite this, life was good and his was full of love and fun.

Like a lightening bolt from nowhere, tragedy struck the family. Lives were turned upside down and things would never be the same again for Tommy and his siblings.

This is the true story of how two brothers from Liverpool were taken from their family by the authorities and how they survived their journey through the cruelty of the children’s homes and orphanages of the time.

A inspiring story of love, sadness and the unbreakable bond between brothers which simply must be read.

Uncle Tommy your brothers and sisters would be so proud of you if they were here to read this true story, you all had very hard lives but enriched with a love and loyalty that was rooted in you all and you each have passed that special love and loyalty onto us children, as a family we would sit for hours and hours listening to the stories you would all tell us,we would all laugh and cry at the thought of what our parents went though, The girls had their stories of the times in children's homes my Mum ( Edie ) Auntie Mary and Auntie Aggie would keep us entertained for hours, this has got to be the next book you write. You all have inspired us in our lives, I am proud to have had such strong loving and loyal family. Love you Uncle Tom xxx

5.0 out of 5 stars What a unique story 3 Jun. 2013
By R A P
Format:Paperback
This is a compelling story of two little boys who are removed from their family in Liverpool in the 1940's and placed in the cruel orphanages of the time. It is a childhood tale that is filled with misfortune, sadness and sorrow but their sense of family seems to strengthen in the face of adversities. The book becomes an inspiration to readers. Without asking for sympathy, the author succeeds in painting a story that touches the heart. This is a book that also shows the ability of the human spirit to endure life's challenges.

5.0 out of 5 stars A graphic tale of barbarism 17 Jun. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Thank you for sharing your story with us, your book should be placed in every school library throughout the whole country and pupils should be made to read it and realize that they are very lucky to live in a country that now prohibits such barbaric treatment to youngster who are unfortunate enough to be brought up by the state.

Thank you once again Tommy for having the courage to place your experiences and subsequent survival on record - a sad tale, but a `must read'.

4.0 out of 5 stars An amazing true story. 21 Jun. 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I agree with all the other reviewers about this emotional and gripping story, about the cruelty of most of the Christian brothers, about placing it in school libraries so that the youngsters of today can find out about the hard times for orphanage children in the post war years.
However sadly what lets this book down is the spelling mistakes and typo errors. It needs a complete re edit to put them right.
It's a tremendous story of family loyalty.

5.0 out of 5 stars a brilliant book 17 Aug. 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this book on Friday and had read it by Saturday I couldn't put it down. a very sad story told by an amazing man who cared so much about his brother through the cruel years of the Christian brothers orphanages. children today should read this book in school to understand the true meaning of family sticking together and of how lucky they are today. I lived in marsh lane in the early 80s with my friend pat stenson whos brother david steno was a boxer around the same time he had a knock out punch so I was told. I met your brother Richie a few times didn't he have a big family as well. cant wait for the next book to find out how or if they traced the younger ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars eye opener 12 Jun. 2013
Format:Paperback
A heart wrenching story of strength, determination and LOVE. A story that needed to be told! I grew up listening to many of these stories from my Dad and his brothers and sisters but still couldn't put it down. Makes you want to hug your kid's tight and appreciate the life you have. A must read! Thank you Dad
