Westlife introduce Gravity

Biography

Biography by Heather Phares

In the tradition of British and Irish boy bands like Take That and Boyzone comes Dublin's Westlife. The group's first single, 1999's "Flying Without Wings," entered the U.K. charts at number one, a feat they replicated with "Seasons in the Sun" and "Swear It Again" in 2000. Their self-titled debut album met with similar chart-topping success and quickly went platinum in… Read more in Amazon's Westlife Store

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Said to have extended their recording contract, things look set to continue for Westlife despite the "kiss of pop death" that is the greatest-hits collection. Unbreakable features the very best of their first three albums, their Top 10 hits and the lead single and title track, which was newly recorded for this album. It includes memorable covers, such as the Christmas single "I Have a Dream" by Abba, the duet of a Phil Collins song with Mariah Carey ("Against All Odds") and, like Boyzone before them who did "When the Going Gets Tough", the Comic Relief charity record "Uptown Girl" by Billy Joel. It's quite impressive that half of the songs here have hit the top spot as an A-side, making it a far more appealing album than any of their others, as there simply isn't room for the customary fillers that litter such artists' albums. So with their past encapsulated on one disc, it's time to look to the future for Westlife, although with lessons learnt from Take That's Greatest Hits, Boyzone's By Request, Steps' Gold and possibly the Backstreet Boys Greatest Hits, no one should be holding their breath. --Georgina Collins

BBC Review

Only Westlife could stretch the definition of greatest hits to its full potential. For four years now the band has stolen the hearts of our nation's youth, clocking up a record-breaking eleven number 1 singles and 3 multi-million selling albums along the way. With recent single "Unbreakable" topping up this total, there seems no end in sight for the unprecedented success of these Irish boys.

Unbreakable (the album) is a chronological showcase of their career to date. From debut "Swear It Again" and the karaoke-favourite "Flying Without Wings" to the Cliff Richard cover and forthcoming single "Miss You Nights", the Westlife formula is blatant. They know how to ham it up for the ladies and are masters of the sentimental power ballad, smouldering sincerity and well-rehearsed harmonies.

Maybe it's just that they offer a change in tempo to the staple of the bands' fodder but Westlife sound at their best when they loosen their hips and rock out a bit. "World Of Our Own" is a stormer of a pop song and goes at least some way to excusing their more painful moments, such as "What Makes A Man" and the weedy "My Love".

"When You're Looking Like That" (despite sounding like the illegitimate child of A1 and Boyzone) gives fans the chance to stop sobbing into their Nicky pillows and tap their feet for a moment. Westlife however know their place in pop and the 6 new tracks featured here all show a lean further and further towards more grown up songs as their audience matures and the lure of the US market beckons.

Greatest Hits have a habit of being a final nail in the coffin for many a band before them (remember Steps and Five?), but there still seems to be enough steam in Westlife's engine to keep them going for a while yet. --Jacqueline Hodges

A great collection 22 Jan 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Greatest hits are usually a bit dull if you already own all their other albums, but this is different! This contains all their single remixes (Fool Again's different on their original album), plus six new tracks, including Unbreakable, and the new single Tonight. You can see how they've progressed as a group, from their early days with Swear It Again, to their latest smash Unbreakable, where they sound so much more grown-up. Of the new songs, they all have single potential, but I love Love Takes Two. Mark takes lead vocals and excels, and the lead guitar is brilliant too. Written in the Stars is a very atmospheric emotional song, bound to appeal to any fans. All in all, a great album, worthy of any collection.

Umm yeah 4 April 2003

I'm rather odd, coz I like bands like "Puddle Of Mudd", "[Spunge]" and "Har Mar Superstar", yet I own all of Westlife's albums. I would say that this album is definitely worth getting for the following reason: "LOVE TAKES TWO". LoL. No joke. Mark's soulful lyrics really win the battle for me. Not surprisingly he also features heavily on "Flying Without Wings". "Tonight", recently released, got to number 3, is also pretty great.

If you don't like pop or Westlife you will, certainly, HATE this album.

However, if like me you do, you'll like it, just for the new songs at least. Quite frankly some of their best songs haven't been released as singles, so you'll have to buy the albums. Honestly, you'd think they could release the ones that are a bit different coz there's actually some quality stuff buried away if you look hard enough. "Angels Wings" for example.

If you don't like Westlife read the review that says: "Unbreakable? Not with a hammer" coz that would be right.

"Love takes two"!! The best track by far. (Excluding Flying Without Wings which anyone buying this will already own for sure!) hehe

All your favourite Westlife Hits in one place - what more could you ask for. Whether you are a fully commited Westlife fan, or you have just heard a few tracks, liked them but never got as far as buying an album - with this one, you really can't go wrong!
It is a great mix of all their hits (many No 1s) from the ballads like 'Flying Without Wings' and the new 'Unbreakable' to the more upbeat tracks like 'Uptown Girl' and 'When You're Looking Like That'. There are also a few new tracks (future hits maybe??).
Definately something for everyone!!
