Book Description

18 Mar 2013
An all new romance anthology from four masters of paranormal romance. New York Times bestselling author Angela Knight revisits the world of Guardian and genetically engineered Temporal Enforcers Dona and Alerio who combine their talents and fight their passions as they investigate a time-travel murder spree. USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Ashley continues her Shifters Unbound series as Bear Shifter Cormac is determined to take single mother Nell as his mate, despite her objections, until her sons are endangered and she desperately needs help. Jean Johnson returns to her Vulland Chronicles: On the run after being falsely accused of treason, ex-prince Kiereseth and his companion Vielle take refuge in a snow-bound cabin and in each other's arms. And Hanna Martine expands on the fascinating world she introduced in Liquid Lies. After dissolving their arranged marriage so he can win her on his own terms, Ofarian guard David pairs up with the heartbroken Kelsey to try to thwart an enemy to their race.

This antho was bought for the above authors only, who did not disappoint. I did try to read the Jean Johnson and Hannah Martine tales, but found the former laughable, and its world confusing, so I couldn't finish it. The HM tale, though, was sort of readable, but totally lacking in depth; it certainly didn't live up to its blurb.

Enforcer brings AK's Time Hunter series to a very decent end, and is the tale of Dona Astryr, who appeared as a secondary character in one of the previous TH books, and her commander, Alerio Dyami. The book starts in the middle of a murder scene, where the suspect is Dona's ex-lover (a real whack-job who caused her to be accused of treason), and didn't let up at all. We get to see Riane and her mate, and Galar and his mate from previous books, and the wise-cracking wolf-bot Frieka is in full-form, and even has a horse-bot friend in this. Lots of witty talk from the bots, non-stop action, some romance (we get the guy's thoughts, which made a nice change), a fair few hot sex scenes, plenty of 'riaat' and a HEA. I would have liked to have had a little news of Jane and Baran, as this was the last tale in the series, but still, it was an excellent tale. 4*

Perfect Mate by JA is short and sweet, and is set in the Nevada Shiftertown, led by Eric (Mate-Claimed), where a grizzly-shifter called Cormac has come to fulfil a request from a packmate, who just happened to have once been married to Nell, matriarch-bear in Eric's patch. A case of 'tough guy to the rescue of cub of an equally tough woman', and a HEA that kind of seemed a little quick, but suited both leads. This totally suited the leads, though, as he'd been pack-less for years, and in this book found a mate and grown cubs, and she'd been without her mate since her cubs' father's suicide decades ago.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother unless you're a fan 25 Mar 2013

Save your money. I like novellas; I like anthologies. I didn't enjoy this one. I understand that folks were waiting for some of these stories for a long time, but, in a good novella, I should have been able to come in cold and enjoy the story. The only one of these tales that did that for the reader was, arguably, the one with Bear shifters. The first story - Dona and Alerio's - was nearly unreadable unless you like the "I love him/her but can't tell him/her about it, especially not in the midst of a war". All of these required knowing about the world.
So... if you're already a fan, the stories are probably fine. (I've read worse). If you're not already a fan, don't expect to become one just from dipping your toes into the waters of this collection.
Sorry - I hate giving 2 star reviews, but this was just not fun for someone coming cold into these worlds.

4.0 out of 5 stars As anthologies go this one is a winner. 14 Mar 2013

Four stories of paranormal romance.

Enforcer by Angela Knight - I've been waiting for years for this story. We return to the world of her Time Hunters series. Time travel cops. This story can be read stand-alone but it revolves around Dona & Alerio who we've been waiting for them to get together. Angela Knight writes a steamy sex scene that will leave you in a puddle of goo.

Perfect Mate (Shifters Unbound #4.5) by Jennifer Ashley - Bear shifters Cormac and Nell. I love Ms. Ashley's shifters and the bears in particular. I was thrilled to see this pairing. However I really think this story was too short. Nell wouldn't have given it up that easy. This would have been much better as a book.

The Hunter's Cabin by Jean Johnson - Not being familiar with this world made this story a little awkward but the characters were engaging.

No Surprise More Magical by Hanna Martine - This story takes place in Ms. Martine's Elementals world. I've read and enjoyed Liquid Lies and this story has just moved A Taste of Ice up on my TBR shelf. David is a soldier who has been in love with Kelsey since they were in school together. When the council falls he releases Kelsey from their marriage contract thinking that she was forced into agreeing to pair with him. Truth is Kelsey has always loved him. Now they are thrown together into a life threatening situation will they fess up?

As anthologies go this one is a winner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Stories 15 Mar 2013

What can I say but this was an amazing book. The 4 stories were so very different. My favorite was Jennifer Ashley and her shifters. Nell made me laugh with joy. I can't wait to read more by Jennifer.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the wait or the money 9 Mar 2013

I have eagerly awaited Angela Knight's telling of Dona and Alerio's story, using her gift for telling of complicated, damaged women who manage to find their way. In short story or novel, she has always imbued these characters with a tension that drives the story and builds the empathy of the reader. Yet this installment failed on every level. In trying to bring new readers into the universe, she treated loyalists to lazy tellings of past history that ate up much of the book. Allusions to past experiences and synopses in conversation would have sufficiently updated everyone and not jarred us from the underlying story. Then there was the unnecessary banter between characters, which, in small doses, can lighten a story, but in this brief recitation had the effect of watching a Laurel & Hardy skit in between scenes from poor man's Pretty Woman. Neither terribly satisfying but together, abysmal. By the end, I had skipped several pages of backstory, banter and banal interactions between Dona and Alerio, punctuated by rehashed sex scenes from earlier Knight novels. Sadly, none of the remaining 3 stories in the compilation make up for this waste of money.

4.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars -Unbound and free to love at last 10 Mar 2013
By melindeeloo - Published on Amazon.com

I am guessing that the theme for this one is Unbound and free to love at last. I like anthologies - not just because they fit perfectly into my ultra time challenged existence - and this promised to be one of my favorite kind of anthologies with those little bonus HEAs for side characters in established series - I was really looking forward to Ashley's and Martine's stories, and, to a lesser extent, the wrap up of Angela Knights futuristic blast to the past. The stories in the order that I read them...

My favorite of collection is Hannah Martine's Elementals short, yep a big misunderstanding kept this pair apart too long but they are adorkable together:) It is also a nice slice of the world and makes me want the next book to get Griffin past his heartbreak to his HEA. 4 stars.

I also liked Jennifer Ashley's Shifter Unbound connected short, bearshifter Nell gets her HEA and I really liked the guy who is determined to be her mate, the I love you's do come just a bit too fast though - I wish that this had been a longer story I have liked to have seen more of this pair together since Nell had a lot to work through from her past. 3.5 stars.

I haven't read anything from Johnson's steampunkish fantasy series, so I don't know if fans were dying for the pair (the former prince and the courier) to get together, but for me there was a bit too much of an attempt to squeeze in the world building and not enough of getting to know the characters - they are so formal to start, that I didn't feel the buildup of tension before they become lovers. So this ended up more on the okay side for me. 2.5 stars.

After two attempts, I am kind of stymied on Knights final long time in coming Timecop/Warlord story. The set up is gruesome (aftermath of torture and rape) and the bad guy is evilly sadistic and we are privy to his desire to have the heroine raped to death so this is a bit of a hardsell for me when I only vaguely remember the characters. DNF so far, because it just isn't holding my attention but I'll probably keep nipping away at it, since I hate to give up....
