Probably not the best summary for a collection which begins with a short personal piece about heart trouble in the family, followed by the first three chapters of Foer's new novel - but what's striking about Lightning is how emotionally open it is: a refreshing quality these days; at the same time, the writing is always innovative and insightful, and although not every stylistic trick convinces, and the odd one owes a bit to Paul Auster, it's engaging and leaves you curious for more ... and repays rereading too.
