A sad story and yet uplifting story. Mathilde is hadicapped and confined to a wheelchair. She meets and falls in love with a young fisherman, Manech, and they plan to marry. He is called to the trenches in WW1 but suffers an appalling experience and tried to escape by shooting his hand. Condemned to death he and 4 others are pushed into No Man's Land. From there on it is then the story of Mathilde's determination to find out what actually happened to him....Beautifully written, but how I wish my French was better! The total story is tragic yet uplifting. The ending unexpected, but realistic.
A wonderful read.

A language style that wonderfully haunts you. 8 Feb. 2013

Japrisot has phrasings that wonderfully haunt you... as if no one else could have said it so perfectly. The English edition (Linda Coverdale) is very good as well, and I occasionally used it if I needed to check an idiom. Japrisot's "you are there" style provides a sense of immediacy with Mathilde's inner life. Coverdale also does well with that. We know Mathilde understandably better than the absent Mannech (from what she tells us of him, or from his writing after the shell-shock). The novel is, after all, her story. But Japrisot uses that same technique to individuate the men who were in the trenches, the men she goes in search of. And finally in the verbal economy of the novel's conclusion I can't imagine anyone ever forgetting the final four-fold repetition, "elle le regarde" so that all the detail of past three hundred and seventy pages converges into a single contemplative moment with her.

A most unusual, personal view of World War I through the lives of several unique and distinct characters. Beautifully written.
