This is a budget shoot-through umbrella, so it's cheaply constructed. But at the price, it's entirely OK for the amateur/beginner who won't be subjecting it to frequent heavy (or careless) use.

You may want to strengthen the tubular shaft, which feels just a bit too flimsy. Get yourself about 45 cm of 6mm wooden dowel, and wind a spiral of insulating tape round it. Insert this into the tubular shaft, and you have a much sturdier but still light-weight brolly. Simples!

If you're starting out and on a low budget, this brolly will be just fine. At just [...] , I'm very pleased with mine!

Better as a diffuser 24 Jan 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase
Though the description says that it is a reflector it works best as a diffuser. I have tried it both ways and firing the flash through the brolly gave the best effect.

The umbrella action is reasonable for the price but the the tube is hollow and quite thin metal so when using it within a holder there is a risk that you could crush it if over tightened. When I get the chance I will put a wooden dowl in the tube to strengthen it. It folds down and fits in to the light stand holder reducing the things you need to carry.

It is really a case of you get what you pay for a starting point or casual use it is OK.

It's Cheap AND made me money through corporate photography. This umbrella is great for portraits just have a flash shoot through the umbrella to light one side of the face then put a reflector on the other side.
It's light weight and portable. Fits a duffel bag along with the two light stands and reflector. Check out the Teach First website and look for the people section. The portraits done by this set up. It's also quicker to open and close than double fold umbrellas.

It does have it's limitations not because its cheap but because it's an umbrella.
Umbrellas are not ideal for windy outdoors. Use a smaller soft box instead. But wait don't we use normal umbrellas outdoors all time? Yes but normal umbrellas point up.

I was also one those who fitted a pencil in the rod to keep it sturdy and it works!

I've used it for 20+ shoots now and it is still making money.

Decent diffuser but poor quality
The umbrella works OK as as a diffuser but mine jammed open on the second use.

The umbrella is very cheaply made, equivelent to a £2 umbrella from a market. Read more
