Book Description

Dandy, detective and adventurer Ulysses Quicksilver tackles the enemies of the crown in this thrilling collection of three complete short stories drawn from the steampunk Pax Britannia Ulysses Quicksilver novels. 5.0 out of 5 stars Leap in to a great series! 22 Jun. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm a shameless fan of the Ulysses Quicksilver books - a swashbuckling steampunk series that keeps going from strength to strength.

For the (slightly ridiculous) price of 69p, this is an opportunity to leap in to the series. The three stories introduce the charismatic Quicksilver and his stoic butler, Nimrod. The short story "Vanishing Point" (contained in this collection) is also a fantastic background piece for the most recent events in the series - sneakily cueing several key characters (and villains).

Even if you're NOT interested in pursuing the long-running series, this collection is a great deal of self-contained fun. All of the adventures are complete from start to finish, and feature the sort of clever mysteries, stylish locations and cinematic action sequences that have made Pax Britannia so notable.

This is cheaper than a bottle of Pepsi. I can't emphasise enough what a great deal it is...

5.0 out of 5 stars Three ripping good Yarns 17 Jun. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I thoroughly enjoyed all 3 of the short stories contained in this book. I am a fan of Steampunk and this book ticked all of the boxes for me. The stories were a good length and were well written.

I haven't read anything by this author before so, as the description said that it was a perfect starting point for new readers, I thought it was worth giving it a whirl. I am so glad I did.

Ulysses Quicksilver is a dandy come secret agent of the crown and these three stories give you a good overview of the type of gent he is. The first story is a standard Murder Mystery which had me gripped from the beginning. The second shows us his more personal side with a seance organised by his ex. The third story was my favourite with Ulysses descent into madness.

Well worth the 69p I paid for it :D

5.0 out of 5 stars A Steampunk Ripping Yarn 10 Dec. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm not spoiling to say it's set in an alternative steampunk modern era. It's into the adventure quite quickly. Its action packed and fast moving. Although I spotted one or two plot elements coming, there were plenty more I didn't predict. Many of his escapades are rather far fetched, but you have to uspend reality checks for steampunk anyway so it didn't bother me.

Note sure why it's presented as short stories, it seemed one larger one to me.

But I'd definitely both others in the series.

3.0 out of 5 stars predictable 17 Nov. 2011

three short stories that required very little imagination, each story followed an almost straight line, with few twists or turns and the characters were pretty one dimensional. The stories tried to build the excitement, but you were ready for each revelation long before it arrived. Each story was readable, and pleasant enough, and the writing was ok, but there was little to grab you or fire you up.
Perhaps the full books are better with more depth, but on the strength of this I won't be bothering any time soon.
