a real treat! 23 July 2004

Format:Audio CD
This is a really enjoyable and intense 45 minute listen. Post-Rock which covers so many bases it's staggering. Listen out for flourishes of heavy, dance and folk mixed in with all the proggy post-rock stuff that probably made you consider this in the first place. The songs shift gear and direction quickly, but always elegantly. This feels like it has been put together and edited deliberately and thoroughly - nothing is wasted
It will take a few listens to put it all in place - so don't give up early - patience will be rewarded. They have certainly picked up the Oxford influence of making intelligent yet engaging music.

Once upon a time, a little known Oxford band with a penchant for daft album titles, made somewhat of a name for themselves by including no vocals to any of their music. Then one day they got David Line or 'Seafood' to sing for them, much fuss was made by their fans, I mean, its wouldn't be the same would it? Well, actually, yes it would. This is the Rock's first album proper, and, well, it's very good.

The big interest point of the album was always going to be 'Everything's Opened Up' feat. Mr Line and I can assure you it doesn't disappoint. Using vocals as only they could the track does provide the focal point of the album. The excellent 'Luke Warm Skywater' does just about enough to steal the show, however. The instrumental nature of the album makes sifting through the tracks somewhat cumbersome, but this is definitely one of the most pleasant ways to pass an hour.

Blisteringly good live The Rock somehow manage to bring this energy and talent into their recordings as well.
