Biography

Ultravox is a British New Wave rock band. They were one of the primary exponents of the British electronic pop music movement of the late 1970s/early 1980s. The band was particularly associated with the New Romantic and New Wave movements.

This band was effectively led by two different individuals in its career, two frontmen who, curiously, never played together in the band at the same ... Read more in Amazon's Ultravox Store

Not many bands can boast a music business icon like Eno as producer on their debut album (not even U2!) but Ultravox! pulled it off in 1976. Indeed, Eno flew back from production sessions with Bowie in Berlin to work on this, so enthused was he with what they were doing.
Punk was at its height at the time and the early Ultravox! - as typified here - were both inside and outside it; taking its energy but fusing it with the artier Roxy/Bowie influence of a few years before and even looking out to what might be on the horizon.
Outstanding tracks: debut single Dangerous Rhythm with its subtle reggae lilt and edgy lyric, Slip Away, the arty I Want To Be A Machine (from a "difficult" time when John Foxx wanted to dispense with all emotions, making working on this album and life generally very awkward with his colleagues and friends) and the brilliant My Sex. I saw Foxx live a couple of years ago and he did a superb rendition. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up throughout and I looked around to see a room of blokes my age - mortgages, kids, beer bellies and all - almost weeping at the sheer intensity of the song. An amazing moment.
If you want to find out where the long road to Vienna and commercial success started, check this out.

Life changing unique music that I discovered after listening to THE HAHAHA! album at a party that led me to be a fan until Midge Ure's life-draining efforts. A must for ultravox fans who maybe liked the music of the Vienna period but wanted more meat. John Foxx's contribution to Ultravox gave it a uniqueness although some see a similarity with Roxy Music but then I was a bit of fan of that before I found this better version and was liberated. Not quite as lively as HAHAHA! but enough to give you a good taste for more. But beware, if you like it its adictive llke a good book that'll keep you going all the way to 'Systems of Romance'. This is the 'In the Beginning' album.

Alot of people don't realise that Ultravox were quite a different beast before Midge Ure joined. This is an amazing album for 1977. It preceded the style that influenced japan, xtc and The Boomtown Rats. With amazing Brian Eno influence, My Sex sounds like something off David Bowie's Low album. The raw rock style is reminicent of current New York rockers The Strokes with songs like Wide Boys. This is an album that sounds amazing today. It is in style for todays post punk revivalists. Great bass recording! This is as entertaining as any Roxy Music album if not more so for the punk influence and avant influence of Eno.

I cannot for my life see how one can miss the fact that this is not a Foxx-era disc. :-) The sleeve says "1981", and the mustachioed guy on the cover most certainly looks like Midge. Oh yes, and there's no exclamation mark in the band's name. Leaving that aside, we know we have plenty of other live albums from around this time to choose from, counting also the fresh "Return to Eden". I think I prefer the mostly live 2nd disc of the remastered "Rage in Eden" cd from 2013. The year 1981 is where the band really began sliding in terms of musical quality and suspense, as evidenced by the horrible single b-sides to the 1981 studio album. After this, I am sorry to say that there was no turning back to the good old days. I saw their European tour in 2010, which took them all the way to my little native village of Vreta kloster in Sweden. Midge is now bald and fat, but he can still play guitar and sing as well (well ... ) as ever!
