Product Description

No one represented the 70 s quite like legendary designer Halston and, in his new documentary, Ultrasuede; In Search of Halston filmmaker Whitney Sudler -Smith takes us on a fabulous fun-and-fact filled journey through that man s life and times. Smith has had a lifelong fascination with the 70 s look and lifestyle and, using his self-confessed era envy to great effect, he reconstructs, recaptures, and revels in the glories of this truly great American artist.

4.0 out of 5 stars As good as it gets 20 Dec 2011
Considering the constant vogue for all things 1970's, interest and info on Halston himself remains vague.
Intruiged as I was by Steve Gaines' 1980's biography, 'Simply Halston', I've been scouring youtube and the like in vain for the last few years for clips on the man.
There's hardly anything there. No chat shows, no documentaries- almost nada.
This witty, stylish film is as comprehensive as its possible to get considering many from that era (Like Halston himself) are now dead or mad.

Whitney Sudler-smith himself comes across as egotistical, innocent, charming and annoying, comic and cool. He's not shy about showing some of the more obnoxious interviewees or his seemingly 'make it up as I go along' style.
This is refreshing rather than annoying and this fine work left me wanting to know to know more about both subject and director.

Halston was one of the most clever and interesting fashion-designers in the United States; he very much understood womens need for comfortable, timeless and chic clothes. This documentary gives a "whole" view of the man and the clothes.

1.0 out of 5 stars A sordid little biopic. 30 July 2012

Whatever you do, don't watch this with family. It seems to be much more about the interviewers ego than a balanced, fair and respectful biopic of the fashion designer. It's a shame that he didn't respect Liza Minnelli's advice to him. There is no warning in the Amazon.co.uk description above. It gets lots of bad reviews at Amazon.com and all over the internet, in fact. Steer well clear of it.
