I bought this product as I have weak joints and I wanted to improve my core strength. My physio recommended getting a balance board, and this one seemed very reasonably priced.

Taking it out of the box, it looked like a cross between a UFO, an old-fashioned LP and some kind of liquorice confection. Round and black, with bobbles on, and a red circle in the middle. It's made of a special non-slip tough plastic, and the bobbles also help to prevent slipping off. It is sturdier than you might think, and my husband (who is 6 foot, and of average build), can stand on it without any threat to its structure.

When I first stepped on it, it was quite scary, I couldn't stay on there and I kept stumbling off. (As you don't fall very far it's not really that scary, but it was more the lack of control that worried me). This made me think that I had no core strength at all! But I think it just takes practice to know what kind of movements make it balance, and as I practised a bit that day I got better at it. The muscles that you have to use to stay balanced are the ones that you use for core strength, and obviously the more that you use them the more toned they're going to get.

Incidentally, the first time my 6 year-old used it, she could balance perfectly and do all of the exercises included in the instructions. She couldn't understand what all my wobbling was about! It just shows you, I suppose, how much core strength we have naturally when we're children, and how, without the right exercise we tend to lose that over the years. I have to say though, now that I've been using it for a bit I can do most of the tricks that she can do!

I can see some improvements in my own core strength and the balance board also teaches me how I should be standing.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
There are a plethora of wobble/rocker/balance board devices on the market claiming more or less the same benefits. I have used a few and conclude that this type is a happy medium in terms of use, price and design and makes a worthwhile addition to any home training equipment you may already have.

Many such devices rely on an inflatable ball in the centre which I have found to be more trouble than it's worth (they need frequent inflation and though the bounciness may help build balance they can also over-flatten if you are my weight!). This board has a solid molded fulcrum and is made of a single piece of plastic with a small central circle applied to the top. Nothing to deflate or puncture; nothing to break off.

I would mainly use this with shoes on but have tried barefoot and personally did not find the grip-texture uncomfortable but it is more aggressive than what I have used before. The diameter is relatively small compared to other similar products which means that if you wish to use it for squats, press ups etc. then you'll be forced to keep your legs quite close together.

Nonetheless I think this more than adequate for balance training, core work and developing lower leg and ankle stability. If you have - or can improvise - some moderate weight barbells or medicine balls then you can perform a huge variety of exercises on it forcing greater emphasis on form, core strength and balance. The instructions only list a handful of exercises but there's plenty more on the web if you need inspiration.

It's also fun (my four year-old likes using it) and relatively safe for (supervised!) use by a child so I am very happy with it and it strikes me as well worth the money.

I am 60years-of-age and I weigh 12stone 7lbs, size 8 shoe, this board is the right size for me but as you see I do not have large feet, was worried about the size of the board but it is OK!
I twisted my ankle on the dance floor recently (no comments please!) went to the Physio and was told to stand on one leg (no really!) to exercise my ankle, then thought what about a balance board? got it super quick only waited 4 days thought it would take longer, has taken me about 20 seconds to master the basic balance, well I do have an Razor A5 Lux Kick Scooter so thought my inner ear balance was good, will enjoy learning the exercises while watching the telly!!!!

I recently suffered a really severe knee ligament injury and needed to purchase some equipment to continue my physio at home -this balance board was excellent value and does the job perfectly enabling me to continue my rehab -it is sturdy but light and can easily be taken with me wherever I go-I use it regularly and it continues to be really useful

I was originally hoping for a bigger balance board but at 36cm this isn't lacking anything. It is great for exercise with limited space and is really light weight so is easy to carry and store. It comes with instructions on how to exercise and is a great daily activity. I used this for a week before going surfing for the first time and I was the only person who managed to stand up. This is perfect for balance and core training and squats should help me tone up. Not to mention fun with the family and friends trying to get them all on. Wouldn't recommend for the elderly as it is by definition really unstable (nearly lost granny). But can work as a foot rest to keep the ankles and legs mobile (which could be useful for anyone stuck at a desk for long hours). At this price I would definitely recommend.
