Product Description

CD Description

Soundgarden's first full-length release, 1988's ULTRAMEGA OK, showed that there was more than met the eye to this fast-rising Seattle quartet. The group's first two releases, the EPs SCREAMING LIFE and FOPP, were both straight-ahead sludgerock, but ULTRAMEGA OK broadened the musical scope. While monolithic garage riffing and punk's messy energy were still both integral parts of the sound, healthy doses of punk and heavy metal were now added to the rich mix as the group's songwriting and instrumental prowess improved greatly. The opening "Flower" brings to mind '60s-era acid rock, while otherhighlights include the barnstorming "All Your Lies", the witchcraft metal of "Beyond the Wheel", the vast "Mood for Trouble", the plodding blues of "Incessant Mace", and a cover of Howlin' Wolf's "Smokestack Lightning".

4.0 out of 5 stars Heavy riffed 80s grunge, 1 Feb 2001
an admirable debut from possibly the best seattle band of the Grunge era. Raw and heavy, and with classics such as 'Flower' and 'Nazi Driver' this is certainly an album that would grace any rock fans collection. However it just fails to meet the 5 star criteria as there a few songs which let it down. Overall, a good album which bares many similarities to "louder than love". As an introduction to the band Superunknown is probably better, but for hardcore fans like myself, this kicks ass.
