It is the 41st millenium, a savage and grim dark future when mankind battles for survival in a galaxy riven by bloodshed and destruction. Humanity teeters on the brink of extinction, assailed on all sides by the most grievous enemies - aliens, mutants and traitors. Only the colossal numbers of the Imperial Guard and the indomitable strength of the Space Marines, genetically-enhanced elite warriors of superhuman power and devastating ability, can offer any defence. And, of all the venerable and ancient chapters of Space Marines, the Ultramarines are arguably the most powerful, most respected and the most fearless... Based on the internationally successful futuristic table-top war strategy game, Warhammer 40,000, Ultramarines uses state-of-the-art facial capture technology and visually powerful CGI animation, inspired by Games Workshop's rich tradition of art and design, to bring to life the Space Marines characters and their adversaries in the first-ever feature length movie of the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

This movie is incredibly good especially as it's games workshops 1st attempt at a movie.
The space marines look awesome and their vehicles look even better, especially the strike cruiser in orbit.
The way the space marines move gives the impression of effortless power as is expected from their power armor.
The daemons are very impressive and the landscape is flawless.
There are a couple of things that the company got wrong such as:
1 - they appear to have gotten chaplains and librarians mixed up.
2 - the bolters of the ultramarines are able to effortlessly penetrate the chaos power armor which anyone that plays the game knows is wrong.
3 - The flames one of them carries appears to effortlessly kill the chaos marines which anyone that plays the game knows is only slightly less ridiculous than the bolters.
But overall the movie was very impressive and money well spent.
A couple of things I would have preferred are:
1 - A better introduction to explain the movies context like star wars opening.
2 - Have normal humans in the movie as the fact most space marines are 7 or 8 feet tall isn't obvious as there is nothing to compare them to.
3 - The film just assumes the watcher will know what a chaos marine is.
4 - How the daemon got out of the book isn't obvious as the imperial fists are unlikely to have just started reading it after 10'000 years so the daemon will likely have tricked one of them into it or a chaos marine may have been able to sneak into the fortress monistary.
5 - They downplayed the crushing, intolerent galaxy wide religion of the divine emperor to the point that the space marines might as well have been talking about Santa instead of the "man" every citizen is forced to worship from birth to death.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must for Warhammer fans 13 Jun 2013
Format:DVD
Despite not playing Warhammer for quite some time, the moment I first heard about this film I couldn't wait to see what it would turn out like. It's planned to be the first of many Warhammer films and I found it interesting that they decided to go down the animated film route, rather than live action. Interested to see what would be done, I was definitely not disappointed.

The film manages to throw you straight into the world instantly making you feel almost like one of the characters! Whilst at times, the animation doesn't quite work, on the whole it's very impressive and makes a nice change too. There's plenty of characters and references any fan will spot, with lots of new ideas and characters added to the movie as well, giving the film a fresh feel whilst staying true to the game for us fans.

The voice-acting is also very, very impressive with a superb cast including John Hurt!

A must for any fans of Warhammer (old or new!) . Go and see it!

Recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just about enjoyable 10 May 2013
Format:Blu-ray
As a fan of ultramarines and all things warhammer 40k universe ive been waiting on this film to come down in price or grab a bargin on ebay to be bought as waited so long for a film to come out... its just passable.
The film itself is a bit hit and miss...for example it lingers too much on a scene so youre waiting for the next bit so can get a bit boring and time consuming.. esp from a short film and also with todays technology id thought the face animation would be better.Other glaring 'misses' include the marines/chaos marines are easily killed...the bolter is a piece of kit granted but theyre wearing power armour. Flamer too, going down like ten pins. The marines didnt look like their armoured giants, didnt feel they were walking armoured soldiers the stomps and steps. But there are 'hits' the speeder looked and sounded like a vehicle of importance which the film portrayed well, when the action starts its very good.. animation is smooth and the sounds perfect for the weapons...esp the bolters. The voice acting is quite good too.

Looking at the intro of dawn of war 1 this is what the film shouldve been like.. wouldve been alot more popular and therefore likely sequels.. theres a load of books in the warhammer 40k universe and a huge oppotunity to turn them into books.. esp gaunts ghosts, ultramarines,(uriel ventris)horus heresy and others..potential is massive.. but after this film its looking unlikely. Its a shame as this film couldve been better but then it couldve been worse.
If youre wanting to watch it as a film then wait till it comes down in price,if youre a fan buy the special edition with the extras... a pristine copy is a joy to behold :)

I had high hopes for this film, as did many it seems. The first thing to immediately hit you will be the rather bland CGI used, it's way below standards for something so recent. When you look at some of the animations in the 40k video games like the intros to Dawn of War II for example, this falls flat on it's arse.

As far as the story goes, it's not terrible, there's some brilliant use of tension and atmosphere but it's just a little stark, the story feels a little small in scale for such an epic brand. The battle sequences are well animated, and violent, but it's nothing particularly special.

I think it's been a fairly pointless endeavour for Games Workshop on the whole. It wasn't received very well and could mean no more movies are made, which would be a shame because there's so much potential just waiting to be used. I would recommend watching it at least once for fans, but don't expect to be blown away or gripped by a dark, engaging story.

I have seen a few people say it looks cheap and crap. But realistically, did we expect an avatar looking film or any where near it? No! of course not. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Great film
Thoroughly enjoyed. Hopefully the 1st of many 40k film. Animation can be a bit choppy from time to time, but you'll ignore this as you become immersed in he story

4.0 out of 5 stars Ultramarines!
A little slow to start, the sound is a bit dodgy in places, but if you are a 40K fan its a lot of fun to see it come to life on the big screen!

1.0 out of 5 stars disappointing
Disappointing to say the least, looks cheap even tho cost me double the price of a decent dvd. With so many great books coming out about the heresy they allow this to be made. Read more
