It is the 41st millenium, a savage and grim dark future when mankind battles for survival in a galaxy riven by bloodshed and destruction. Humanity teeters on the brink of extinction, assailed on all sides by the most grievous enemies - aliens, mutants and traitors. Only the colossal numbers of the Imperial Guard and the indomitable strength of the Space Marines, genetically-enhanced elite warriors of superhuman power and devastating ability, can offer any defence. And, of all the venerable and ancient chapters of Space Marines, the Ultramarines are arguably the most powerful, most respected and the most fearless... Based on the internationally successful futuristic table-top war strategy game, Warhammer 40,000, Ultramarines uses state-of-the-art facial capture technology and visually powerful CGI animation, inspired by Games Workshop's rich tradition of art and design, to bring to life the Space Marines characters and their adversaries in the first-ever feature length movie of the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

Brilliant Film 27 Sep 2011
By Pat
Format:DVD
If you are a Warhammer 40K fan (especially a Space marine player), then this film is for you!! I will not spoil your viewing pleasure but the film is not just a blast 'em up fest. There is a great story behind the film. The Ultramarines are one of the 'Founding Chapters' in the Warhammer Universe. And the film centres on an elite band of these special marines in search of a distress beacon. I will not say anymore about the story as you can slowly watch the tale unravel.

There are some big names behind the computer generated characters. Names like John Hurt, Terence Stamp and Sean Pertwee. Admittedly the film seems a bit short at 76 minutes, but the action scenes and dialogue are excellent and will keep you thinking and leave you on the edge of your seat. For the 'casual' viewer some of this film may not suit your tastes. But if, like me, you are an avid Warhammer 40K 'geek' and player who loves the diverse Warhammer 40K universe, then this film is custom tuned for you and your senses!

Finishing words must be aimed at you Warhammer 40K people out there! "We march for Macragge. And we will know no fear!!"Ultramarines A Warhammer 40,000 Movie (DVD)

Amateur effort 1 Mar 2012
Format:DVD
A solid if unspectacular script by Dan Abnett and a uniformly excellent voice cast, together with the long established art design of the 40K universe this could have been a good first crack at making a Warhammer movie. Alas it is let down by a terrible director who clearly hasn't the first clue how to stage or shoot even the most basic of scenes. Long pointless pauses, mistimed conversations, unestablished and confusing geography and little to no effort to distinguish between characters. The camera constantly seems to be a few steps behind the action. Quite often I'd only really be aware of what had been happening after the fact. In a couple of cases things literally take place off screen and we only cut to them mid-event, very confusing. Character animation is wooden and weightless throughout, a question of artistry (or lack of) not budget. Any number of budgetary restrictions can be masked with a modicum of skill, unfortunately first-timer Martyn Pick is found lacking. There a a handful of sequences where the cast and crew's efforts shine but they are squandered, lost in a mire of amateur showboating and bad storytelling.

A missed opportunity. Disappointing.

The script by Dan Abnett isn't as good as the fan base believe it is, because it's so much of the same old rubbish. This 'movie' feels like a children's matinee film I'd watch as a child, cobbled together from what somebody who has no ideas in their head thinks will satisy, and that's the big failure.

This film was made to satisfy a fan base, not entertain them. Throughout the production many excuses were made about the low budget and I remember being preached to at the 2010 Games Day screening about how "true fans" would support the effort. Well, I don't support this because it's rubbish.

Animation: For an animated film, a key asset is the animation. It looks like something homebrewed on blender. It's genuinely embarrassing to watch.
Story: Some Marines are cool and tough. Hate Chaos. See Chaos. Wonder about the nature of Chaos. Kill Chaos. I can be real man nao? Rubbish.
Voice Acting: Pretty good, get the audiobook of the film.

They got no money from Games Workshop to make this film and their shareholders should be glad. This film is abysmal.

Interesting for the real warhammer 40K fan
An interesting film for the Warhammer 40K universe fan. It is a bit short and not to fancy graphically but a must buy for the fan.
