I was a bit wary when purchasing this Canadian band's 4th album as although i'd heard a couple of very good tracks on-line, some reviews of earlier albums suggested they tended to be patchy affairs, but i took the plunge anyway.
Initially i thought this album was following in the same mold and would have only given 3 stars after my first few listens but it's definitely improving with each play hence the 4 star rating.
It opens with the excellent 'pretty boy' which has a driving rhythmic synth backing over Catherine's lovely vocals. Next "fall for you" has a very 80's sound reminiscent of Howard Jones but the best track is number 3 'new summer' with gorgeous vocals/harmonies over a slightly off kilter musical backing.
The album definitely sags in the middle with albeit some nice electro-pop but for me too "lite" and could have done with more oomph.
It improves again with 'in fire' which has a darker sounding vocal from Catherine and this is followed by the very poppy 'privileged poor' before the album ends with the nice dreamy and catchy 'sleepwalk with me'.
Better than i'd expected but more sky blue than ultramarine?

HASH(0x9b5eca80) out of 5 stars I like this album a lot 24 April 2013

Format: Audio CD
I think this is Young Galaxy's best work to date. The band's best songs are still a few of the ones on Invisible Republic, but Ultramarine is their first album that works well as a cohesive whole. At times it has a tropical influence with just enough of a presence to keep the songs light and lively, but is so subtly used that it somehow manages to avoid sounding silly. And no offense to anyone else in the band, but eliminating the male vocals was something that needed to happen. Catherine McCandless is just too good. Her voice brings warmth to songs that would be otherwise cold and lifeless because of their synthy instrumentation. Highlights are "Pretty Boy", "Fall for You", "In Fire" and "Sleepwalk with Me". Wonderful music for summer!

This album was recommended to me by a friend on Twitter when I asked that I needed some new music recently. I checked it out, and bought it on the spot. Wouldn't have cared how much it cost either. As for what it sounds like? Well I only had one description that I can come up with - It sounds as if Modest Mouse and Lindsey Buckingham had a midnight romp while listening to synth pop. It is not your current indie schlock, and def. worth not only a listen but a purchase.

You will certainly enjoy this young band from Quebec. I will be interested in what their second album produces. Recommended.
HASH(0x9b5ecb34) out of 5 stars A Disappointment After Shapeshifting and Indivisible Republic 16 Mar. 2014

The Deluxe Edition of this album is the way to go here. The new tracks you get really should have been on the album to begin with. They are all top notch 10/10 tracks.

The first three songs, "Pretty Boy", "Fall For You", and "New Summer", are 10/10 songs. The rest of the album is just kind of average to above average until you get to "Sleepwalk With Me" which is another 10/10 song. Some songs copy off of the style of some songs on Shapeshifting, but just are not as good or inventive.

So, originally, I gave the album like a 6.5/10. However, with the deluxe edition it goes to an 8.5/10.

You should buy the full album to get the .wav file quality for these songs.

However, if you are new to the band, listen to Indivisible Republic and Shapeshifting before venturing onto this album.
HASH(0x9b5f01ec) out of 5 stars Disappointing. 8 Nov. 2013

I absolutely love shapeshifting from Young Galaxy and couldn't wait to pick up this cd. It pains me to say that I am very disappointed in Ultramarine. It has a very different sound from shapeshifting. This is more folk music and there is no male/female vocal duets which worked so well before. Shapeshifting had a slightly more electronic/ambient vibe that is clearly missing here. I'd avoid this one if you found yourself enjoying shapeshifting.
