Product Description

March 2012 version 3.0 UltraDisk® USB 2.0 DVR10 memory stick Voice Recorder, cleverly disguised to appear and operate as a fully functional 4GB USB memory stick whilst the primary mechanism acts as a Digital Voice Recorder to discreetly and silently capture crystal clear audio recordings at 128kbps wav format.

Finished in a brushed silver design with black trim. The UltraDisk® USB DVR10 memory stick can be casually carried like an ordinary storage device but it's real powerhouse performance is to capture those important meetings, interviews, dictation or verbal slander within seconds.

The UltraDisk® built in time synchronisation software helps you keep track of when (date/time stamp) the recording was made and how long.

The recorder is designed to be completely discreet and totally silent in operation with just a single slide switch for its entire working mechanism. You can record for 4.5 continuous hours (full battery charge) as one long audio file or record separate audio files for a total of 72 hours. Should you forget to stop the recording, the USB 2.0 UltraDisk®® dvr10 memory stick will automatically store the files in WAV format at the end of its power supply so you do not lose any important data. You can use the DVR10 anywhere, only insert into the PC to charge and transfer your recordings.

I have and use Dragon voice recognition software. I wanted a portable device that I could make verbal notes on then have dragon "type them up". I checked out compatibility on Ultra disk web site
I almost got there. The sound quality was quite good for a portable device. I did manage to take sound recordings and have dragon transcribed them into notes. But for my situation there are two drawbacks.
Firstly the recorder, as stated in its description, saves notes in WAV format. Dragon recognises MP3 format thus the files have to be converted.
Secondly the recorder appears to be compatible only with Windows 7. I have tried it on Windows XP which resulted in the computers locking up. Easily remedied by a reboot but not much use to an XP user.
thirdly, well this is a work in progress. If I resolve some of these issues I'll let you know.
The three star rating is based more on how useful this piece of equipment is in my particular circumstance. The thing looks quite sweet but I'm in no position to comment on battery life and reliability as yet.

So here we are a few months on. I now know the limitations of this product (all products have limitations)and am happy to work within them. Recent Updates to Windows XP on my computer have resulted in the product working and stopped by computer(s) hanging when I plug the product in.
The battery runs for quite a long time (4 hours) but must be charged on the day of use to get good recording time. Once fully charged, that charge will deplete on standing without use within a day or so.
WAV to MP3, well I`lljust use the free conversion programme.
All in all - Jolly Good. CG Oct11

I found the product straightforward and easy to use.

The performance and features way better than my old Olympus recorder.

Features in relation to price, excellent!

Very happy to recommend.

I hear voices 2 Nov 2011
By Flaco
NOTE: I have the pre-2012 2GB version of this device, which is what this review was originally written for but I have noticed that the product description has changed to 'New version 2012', so would be wise to check out more recent reviews.

Needed something cheap and cheerful for recording university lectures. Other recorders might have better sound quality, but they also have many other features which I don't need at all (with price tags to match). What's more, some of the more expensive offerings demand some ridiculous conversion techniques for saving the recording to a PC.

The sound quality is ok-ish at best (describing it as crystal clear is stretching it - NOTE this observation is directed at the manufacturers description, not other reviewers' opinions as it is subjective for everyone). If the speaker is within 5ft and facing the recorder it's fine, but playback volume will need to be raised significantly beyond that point, so positioning is tricky, especially if the speaker is highly 'mobile' or speaking out to the audience one minute and turning round to look at the projection screen the next. Additionally, you MUST place it on a surface where no one else is sitting, because every time an elbow, hand or pen hits the table top (even lightly), it will 'boom' through on playback and make it impossible to hear the speaker (the sensitivity of a recording device is not synonymous with clarity). This is also a problem if you have 'chatty' members of the audience around you. Whilst 36hrs storage is useful, that's of no use to me if I cannot record for more than 5hrs before having to recharge it on a USB port, at which point I would be transferring the recordings anyway, so I would be much happier with a higher recording bit-rate in exchange for less storage.

Obviously you cannot playback recordings from the unit itself, but that's perfectly logical given the functionality and price-point.

Transferring the recordings to PC is very simple. Right-click on a recording in the 'VoiceList' partition of the drive and select 'Save to Computer'. Once you've done that you can rename the file to whatever you like in any folder of your choice. Being WAV files, they can be played in Windows Media Player instantly. I use this stick between two different computers and I've noticed that it has registered the fact by offering separate 'VoiceLists' for both XP and Windows 7. Clever.

There is just a single slide switch on the side to turn it on/off. It is suitably stiff and would be very difficult to turn it on or off inadvertently, which is great.

Despite any shortcomings, I am very happy with the purchase and would recommend it: no-nonsense product at a reasonable price. I also like the way people don't believe me when I tell them it's a voice recorder!

PROS:
- Ease of use
- Recordings directly transferable to PC for simple playback and storage
- Dual purpose (recorder and data storage)
- Portability
- Price

CONS:
- Middling quality/clarity of recordings
- Files cannot be renamed until transferred to PC

(Flawless operation in XP Home 32-bit on WMP11 and Windows7 64-bit on WMP12)
