Product Description

Product Description

This collection embraces the golden age of exotica, from the mid-50s to the late 60s. Eighteen vintage masterpieces performed by exotica's most evocative artists conjure up enchanting images of exotic destinations: Polynesia, Hawaii, Africa, Arabia and India are all visited during this sonic journey. The listener will experience the wild calls of the rainforest, the heat of tiki torches, the pounding rhythms of the African jungle and the gyrations of Arabia's belly dancers. Classic tracks from Martin Denny include: "Quiet Village", "Swamp Fire" and "Misirlou". Rarities from Les Baxter include "Atlantis" and "Voodoo Dreams/Voodoo". Fantastic examples of vocal exotica include Bas Sheva's "Lust" and both "Babula" and "Wimoweh" by the ersatz Inca Princess Yma Sumac. As with all volumes of the Ultra Lounge series, this album is meticulously researched and stylishly packaged with superlative stereo mastering. --F.B.Hawkes

4.0 out of 5 stars A massive influence on Brian Wilson, 5 Dec 1999
I was so glad to find this CD, simply because it would cost a fortune to buy the original albums from which these tracks are taken. If, like me, you only have a passing interest in exotica, then this compilation should more than do the trick. I was interested to hear the work of Martin Denny and Les Baxter primarily because I had read that their use of tuned percussion, animal noises, and unusual instruments was an influence on Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. I wasn't disappointed in that respect: there are theremins and bongos aplenty to be found here, and the Smile era obviously started earlier than any of us imagined...

5.0 out of 5 stars Warning! This album is only for the very cool., 7 Feb 2002

I had never heard of most of the tracks on the CD, but then you play it you realise you've actually heard them all before. These tracks have turned up on Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends and Sex And The City. So mix yourself a cocktail (there's a guide with the CD to what cocktails go best) and kick back for some Tikki Lodge fun.

A fabulous CD and one of my favourites. A damn fine collection matched only by the excellent and highly recommended listening of BongoLand also in the series.
