5.0 out of 5 stars A treasure trove of hard-to-find and never-heard-of tracks, 4 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This CD contains some of the most unexpected and enjoyable James tracks that ive heard. In particular the inclusion of the haunting "Still Alive" and "I Defeat", an uplifting duet with Sinead O'Connor, should justify this CD's purchase on their own. However this CD also includes other excellent tracks, most of which i had never heard of before. Admittedly there were several songs that i was less than keen on, in particular songs where James starts using dance music beats which seem inappropriate but on the whole the highlights far outweigh the lowlights

4.0 out of 5 stars A pleasure, and an honest one too., 5 Dec 2001
By A Customer
Thanks for releasing this Mercury, some great songs I would have missed otherwise. The first 4 tracks are great, especially Honest Pleasure (reminds me of The Beatles) and the David Bowie cover, China Girl.

Chunny Pops is really good too, there are some songs that you wouldn't imagine on a "normal" album, like Goalie's Ball, but these occasional tracks are fun to listen too.

Looking at the fan's poll for which songs to include, I don't think this is a bad representation from it at all, I don't think there are any bad songs on Ultra, a couple are average, so what, it has 18 tracks, some outstanding. Some songs are always going to be missed on a compilation like this, but then, that makes them more special to the fans that know them.

One thing (not necessarily a complaint): why the retro washing powder box cover look, and why the name "B-Sides Ultra"!? I am beginning to like the cover though....

3.0 out of 5 stars Some great songs, some mediocre, some naff, 22 Nov 2001
This is a collection 'supposedly' based on a survey by fans, yet some great B-sides have been left off completely. There are some inspirational moments such as the pure catchiness of 'Chunny pops' and the lovely 'Van goghs' Dog. The lake is still an amazing song and Tonight sill sounds like it is a lost James hit. These are the great songs. Stolen Horse is a good song, with a U2 feel to it and definitely feels like more of an album track. The worst songs here are the 'dull' Still alive and 'were you gonna run' pointless. If any james fans have heard 'All one to me' ' downstairs' ' stand' or 'Make it alright' they will not be able to fathom out this collection. My advice is dont buy this: Make your own!
