5.0 out of 5 stars Twelve Shades Of Mellow 16 Dec 2009
By The Wolf TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Concha Buika has the kind of voice which plays havoc
with your heart. This album should carry a health warning!

Her ability to communicate complex emotion is never less
than thrilling. Whether cracked and raw on the likes of
'Sombras', (those big vibrant top notes really do have
the capacity to make your hair stand on end!) or fluid,
warm and romantic on 'Se Me Hizo Facil', she is never
less than a fierce and commited interpreter of the music.

Ms Buika can do playful and teasing too - 'En El Ultimo Trago';
seductively funky - 'El Andariego' and smouldering - 'Luz De Luna'.

Her collaboration with Cuban bandleader/pianist Chucho Valdes
demonstrates an intoxicating chemistry which could only arise out
of a very special kind of mutual understanding and respect for one
anothers musical and emotional sensibilities. Mr Valdes'
(a wonderfully subtle and expressive musician) and his cracking
band give nothing less than their best to frame Ms Buika's craft.

The essence of both artists' skill and mutual affection is
most perfectly demonstrated on the final track 'Vamonos'.
A great voice and an inspired pianist alone together.
Their performance is simply, breathtakingly, beautiful.

The album is, in every possible way, a magical experience.

Essential.

5.0 out of 5 stars Once Addicted... 13 Jun 2011
Format:Audio CD
Buika has a voice and a vocal style that are so unique and mesmerizing that once heard it is next to impossible not to collect all her recordings. This latest recording was made with Choco Valdes on piano and the two together seem to sail into a realm of misterioso that keeps the listener returning for more. Very much in the 'cante jondo' style of flamenco music Buika creates an illusion of magical spiritual seances with her sound. Her gypsy background in Mallorca is strongly evident in this CD called EL ULTIMO TRAGO ('the last mouthful'). Sultry, sexy, dangerous, and sensual.

Listening to Buika sing make this listener want to pair her with the enormously gifted Spanish artist - Lita Cabellut - who likewise came from a background of gypsy life, living in the streets, soaking up the underbelly of life yet pulling those beginnings into her huge canvases - portraits of Frida Kahlo, prostitutes, Don Quixote/Sancho Panza/Dulcinea. Coupling these tow giant artists would be a spectacular event! Grady Harp, June 11

Amazing album. For a jazz and Buika lover this is as good as it gets. Every arrangement seems perfect, singer and musicians helping each other shine. Great songs, with so much emotion in each of them, that they touch me even without understanding half the lyrics.
Try it and you won't be disappointed.
