After years of poor quality martial arts guides with fuzzy (or non-existant) pictures, it's a relief that a new generation of books has arrived, making full use of modern colour photography.

All the moves and drills here are accompanied by large photos and includes a lot of exercises (such as neck ones) which you wouldn't usually find. There are separate sections for boxing, judo, wrestling and karate drills.

Overall this is a large, good-value book for MMA fighters looking for sport-specific training hints to improve their match stamina.

If you train then there is not much new here, but an interesting book with ideas from around the world, I was interested to see how combat systems I am not familiar with train. well written and good pictures, I picked up a few ideas.

If you are new to training and don't get the chance to train at a club then this book and Martin's other one are great starting points on combat specific conditioning.

I've been reading Martin Rooney's stuff online for many years now and this was the first book of his that I decided to buy.

Martin has a great writing style that I love and his passion for fitness and the Martial arts really jump off the pages. The book is beautifully put together and lots of colour photos that are really helpful. The chapters of each on the fighting styles contain a good introduction to the history of each of the fighting styles and a wide variety of exercises that come from each of the places he traveled to to learn. There is very little overlap in the chapters in terms of the individual exercises which is well done. There are no programes in the individual chapters but with a little imagination on the part of the reader this is not a problem. There is also a very helpful section on nutrition.

Where I find fault with this book is the 6 month programme at the end. There are large chunks of the 6 month programme that are not contained in the book at all but published in Rooney's first book 'Training for Warriors'. I understand that Rooney was trying to avoid overlap, however you will struggle to do the 6 month programme if you do not own or have access to 'Training for Warriors'.

To Conclude: A good book with loads of new exercises that you will be eager to try, and include in your current workout; but I just felt that it was a supplement to 'Training for Warriors'

I have both this book and its companion book Training for Warriors. This volume gives a clear and detailed overview of training methods for a number of different martial arts some you may know some you may not. There will be a method that you have never tried before, for me it was kettlebells and it has helped my training no end.

The pictures are high quality and a great deal of effort and care has gone in the production of the book. For the price as well its a great buy when so many other martial arts books are let down by the picture and publication quality. I have reccomended this book to many friends and those that have bought it have not been disappointed.

I friend of mine came across this book in a well known high street book store a while back and I immediately came to Amazon to find a copy!

Written by and expert in the field of martial arts training exercises, there really is an amazing amount of information (good information) in this book. There are hundreds of exercises that are relevant and effective - I've used this book to make my own workouts more specific to my martial art, and to mix up warm up routines at my local club.

The book itself is very well printed, with high quality photos. Equally great to flick back and forth, or read cover to cover. Would happily recommend.
