5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best comics around., 7 Nov 2002
Wow. That's pretty much the only word you can use to sum up how good this collection is. For those who are not aware Ultimate Spider-man is the updated version of the original Webster we all know and love. In updating those classic stories they've not only captured the essence of the original but also in some cases surpassed it.

The writing is constantly amazing, Brian Michael Bendis is one of the best writers in the business and he manages to capture both the fun and the horror of Peter Parkers life without it ever feeling forced or disrespectful to the original. Combine that with the fantastic artwork of Mark Bagley who can capture both fights and taking head scenes and makes them both compelling to look at. And you have one of the best comics on the market period.

This collection houses the first 13 issues introducing some of the most memorable spidey villains such as Kingpin and the Green Goblin, upgraded for a new generation.

Some have complained that the pacing of issues is slower then they'd have liked but I think its spot on (It takes 5 issues here to have happen when it took only 1 for the original). You really learn to get into Peter's life and you become attached to not only him but also his family and friends, so that when the inevitable happens to someone he loves you wish it could be different. That somehow there could be another way.

As an added bonus you get the original plot for the first 6 issues and some original sketches amongst other DVD like extras.

All in all if you're new to comics and want something that's not bogged down in continuity or you're a huge Spider-man fan I strongly suggest buying this. You won't be disappointed.

A must have for any collection, especially with the next hardcover set for release in Feb 2003.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Spider-man Hardback., 13 Aug 2002
When this book hit stores, I knew that I just had to buy it.
Spider-man is one of the most popular superhero characters to young and old readers alike. But as we finally see the stage where Spider-man hits the cinema screen, along comes a whole range of new fans that just want to know more about our friendly neighbourhood Spider-man.
The Marvel Ultimate line of comics is quite possibly the best way to introduce yourself with the character.
This hardback edition covers the first 13 issues of the Ultimate Spider-man title.

Issues:
1:Powerless.
2:Growing Pains.
3:Wannabe.
4:With great responsibility.
5:Life Lessons.
6:Big time superhero.
7:Revelations.
8:Working stiff.
9:Meet the enforcers.
10:The worst thing.
11:discovery.
12:Batte royal.
13:Confessions.

This features Spider-man's first real taste of being a super hero and learning the trade that has made him the most influential hero in Marvel's history.
The book also contains charcter biographies, draft sketches, e-mails from the writers and artists and a reprint of the Spider's first comic book outing
Amazing Fantasy 15, written by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

As the series reaches new heights and the seperate issus gaining more value by the month, this hardback book is essential to all buding comic fans and veterans alike.
The comes with a dust cover designed by Joe Quesada and when removed, it reveals a fantastic blue hardcover with orange engraved title "Ultimate Spider-man".
And possibly the best thing about this book...this is just volume 1 (volume 1 and 2 in paperback) of a series that is not only re-telling the legend that is Spider-man, but is constantly breaking new ground.
So, until the Kingpin feels the need to do an early morning jog followed by a low calorie fruit shake...Make mine the Mighty Marvel.

Featured villians:
Kingpin
Green Goblin
Shocker
Electro
and a pre villain visit from good old Docter Octopus.

(+ and a few others)

(don't forget to say whether or not this review was helpful..thanks)

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it for the love of Pete/Spidey, 20 April 2004
By Eamon McGrane (Swords, County Dublin Ireland) - See all my reviews
AS a Spidey fan for almost three decades Ultimate Spidey is the title thatreenergized my love for the character. Bendis, Bagley and company hit allthe right notes and makes this a thrilling opening arc to the ongoingseries. It had been a long time since the sheer joy and RUSH of a comicbook series had made me giggle like a ten year old in a sweet shop.
Ifyou're a Spidey fan or lapsed Spidey fan -- look no further.
