One of the best comics around., 7 Nov 2002
Wow. That's pretty much the only word you can use to sum up how good this collection is. For those who are not aware Ultimate Spider-man is the updated version of the original Webster we all know and love. In updating those classic stories they've not only captured the essence of the original but also in some cases surpassed it. The writing is constantly amazing, Brian Michael Bendis is one of the best writers in the business and he manages to capture both the fun and the horror of Peter Parkers life without it ever feeling forced or disrespectful to the original. Combine that with the fantastic artwork of Mark Bagley who can capture both fights and taking head scenes and makes them both compelling to look at. And you have one of the best comics on the market period. This collection houses the first 13 issues introducing some of the most memorable spidey villains such as Kingpin and the Green Goblin, upgraded for a new generation. Some have complained that the pacing of issues is slower then they'd have liked but I think its spot on (It takes 5 issues here to have happen when it took only 1 for the original). You really learn to get into Peter's life and you become attached to not only him but also his family and friends, so that when the inevitable happens to someone he loves you wish it could be different. That somehow there could be another way. As an added bonus you get the original plot for the first 6 issues and some original sketches amongst other DVD like extras. All in all if you're new to comics and want something that's not bogged down in continuity or you're a huge Spider-man fan I strongly suggest buying this. You won't be disappointed. A must have for any collection, especially with the next hardcover set for release in Feb 2003.
