4.0 out of 5 stars Attack of the Clones, 3 Dec 2008
By Simon Wells - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This volume is amazing, it may be slow through the middle as it builds up the plot but what a storyline! This volume also guest stars Fantastic Four and Nick Fury. Unlike the original Spiderman where the clone saga storyline went on for years, this is put in one volume.

Mary Jane sees Peter who's mind seems distant because of an argument with Kitty the night before, Kitty was upset that he confided in Mary Jane and not her when he was bitten by the vampire. Mary jane takes Peter to the mall to try to cheer him up and you start to see that they still care for each other. Until the Scorpion attacks, Peter fights him and is shocked to find himself when he looks under his mask.

The Scorpion is taken to the Baxter Building where the Fantastic Four help out Spiderman and all agree that this is very strange, meanwhile Mary jane returns home happy about her time with Peter until she is kidnapped by someone. Peter finds out that the clone is sharing 94.4% of his DNA, Peter returns home to find Mary Jane missing and tries to find her only to be attacked by a woman in a Spider costume and finally returns to his old home to find someone there...Gwen Stacy.

By this point Nick Fury is contacted by the Fantastic Four and calls for the Slayers to be put online. Peter is confused by what is happening and enter Aunt May to confuse the situation even more causing Peter to admit he is Spiderman and to make matters worse, Richard Parker is back from the dead. While Richard tries to explain everything to Peter (he was recruited by the FBI) Nick Fury appears with orders to take them all in.

May has a heart attack, Gwen turns into Carnage, Peter is taken by this mysterious Spider-girl and MJ finds out she has been taken by Peter? The Fantastic Four take May to hospital while Gwen is taken by Fury and Peter finds out that this Spidergirl is himself...confused, I was to.

Peter and his female clone, Jessica Drew go to where it all happened, which turns out to be Oscorp and find that Mary Jane has been transformed by the Oz serium that the clone Peter gave her. As things start to build up enter Fury and the man behind it all...Doc Oc.

Doc Oc agreed to work for the FBI who feared Fury being the only person in charge of super-powered people so he decided to play with Peter's serium to just cause Peter more heartache. Fury lets the clones take on Doc Oc who kills two of the clones leaving only Peter and Jessica able to fight him. Mary Jane is taken to the Baxter Building to be cured, when Fury arrives she turns on him telling him that Peter looked up to him like a father. Fury relises what he has done was wrong, Jessica leaves, Doc Oc is taken down again and Peter admits to MJ that he loves her.

While May is in hospital Peter is allowed to stay round MJ's place and the pair share a kiss only be seen by an upset Kitty.

An amazing read, it is slow through the middle as there is a lot to explain but is absolutely worth the read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible, 18 Oct 2007

Now we all know the original Clone Sage was pure evil, right?

I was very wary about this volume. I've been reading Ultimate Spidey since day one and cannot put into words how amazing it's been. And now I feel guilty for doubting Bendis - this volume is fantastic. Now I should point out that this will certainly NOT appeal to everyone. There are new characters introduced at breakneck pace, and the original Marvel universe simply gets thrown out the window - you need to approach this with an open mind.

Some will love it, some will hate it. Personally, I think it goes to show how Bendis and Bagley are the best team to ever work on Spider-Man - and I don't say that lightly.

I'm the first to admit that being a fan this review might sound a little bias, so I encourage you to read some other reviews first!

3.0 out of 5 stars Hmm, well, it was interesting..., 4 Sep 2007

First off, I'm a fan of the "Ultimate" series. I've read my share of the older comics, but trying to get hold of them all (which is exactly what someone as obsessive as I am wants to do) would be basically nigh on impossible. C'est la vie. The Ultimate collection basically starts from scratch, and gives you whole plotlines with beloved characters (though sometimes drastically changed).

This collection contains Ultimate Spider-Man issues 97 to 105. It's essentially the Ultimate imprint's stab at what I have been informed was possibly the most roundly despised event in Original Spider-Man continuity, the "Clone Saga".

The artwork, as expected of both Marvel and the Ultimate imprint, is gorgeous. Mark Bagley's illustrations still look fantastic. The only thing I could (or would dare) take issue with is some of the layout for panels, though frankly, that's only my tidy mind which automatically attempts to read pages a certain way, and I doubt it would have looked as good in any other layout.

What I would take some issue with is the pacing. This volume is fairly large, and a fair few characters are introduced, and die off, at breakneck pace, with mostly no attempt to engage the reader with them, and little in the way of deep characterisation. One seems to simply be there to die at the appropriate moment. I don't object to this massively you understand, death is very much a part of these comics. But when you fail to register any emotion at a white hat character's death, you should really start thinking why.

The events seemed to unfold so quickly that I felt a little overwhelmed. Please don't get me wrong, it's easy enough to follow the events, it's just that there is little emotional hit from the work at all. The pacing feels too fast compared to previous collections.

That all said, the collection contains some major events in the continuity, and it's still worth a read. If you follow the tale, pick it up. If not, then the series is worth a read, and I'm informed this collection is a heck of a lot better than the original clone saga. So dig in.
