Product Description

Product Description

; The biggest collection of knitting and crochet stitches ever put together in one book; Based on the tried and tested Harmony Guides; Uniquely organised by stitch texture; Hardback edition ISBN 1 85585 990 4 The Harmony Guides are the by-word for knitters wanting to understand a complex instruction or master a particular stitch. For years these indispensable guides have been used by needlecrafters to decipher badly written knitting patterns or clarify tricky technical crochet stitches. Two concepts are at the heart of this beautifully produced book: instant access for the needlecrafter who quickly wants to find what she wants and comprehensiveness (we wanted to include enough stitches to last a lifetime). A graphic tab device allows ease of access, and the stitches are organised by texture. Each stitch is explained with diagrams and written instructions.

This book was bought for me as a birthday present from my Wishlist & although it does provide a wonderful assortment of stitches that I will use, I was rather disappointed that both the knitting & crochet sections start with guides to absolute basic knitting and crochet techniques. I feel that anyone buying this book would be past that initial stage & looking for more advanced techniques. Also that space would have been far better used making the type for the actual instructions for each pattern larger. It can be very hard to read the tiny print when trying to follow an intricate pattern. Another thing that I think is really bad about the editing of this book is the way the instructions are very often over 2 pages. Whoever edited this book was not a knitter! Each set of instructions should be together, you should not have to keep turning back & forth to read your instructions. There are also no graphs to work from, something that many experienced knitters prefer.

This does exactly what it says on the cover. It's a great resource for knitters and crocheters who are looking for inspiration. It is packed with lots of colour photos that show off the stitches and patterns well, although the focus of one or two of the photos is a little blurred. It's difficult to know how else they could have presented it but it has a slightly dated feel to it for a book that was first published in 2003. The advice and ideas in it are good nevertheless.

does what it says 25 April 2009
GOOD THINGS:
Loads of stitches. Ordered in a logical way. Quite pleasing to browse through. Index if you know the name of a stitch. Instructive diagrams at the beginning to illustrate all BASIC stitches (e.g. like dc). A photo for all stitches.

BAD THINGS:
Some of the hardest stitches could have done with maybe another picture, or a bit more explination. Took me a while to work some bits out. The photos are poor quality compared to the rest of the book, and I think that lets down the whole feel of the book.

OVERALL:
If you want a book with loads of stitches in, but don't want to buy loads of books, buy this. Good value for money.
