This book helped us get the most out of our 10 day holiday on Kauai. Especially, the frankness of price comparisons for activities and food. No other book that I looked at even came close to the amount of info that this book had. It includes very detailed maps for the hiking trails. They even have an online up to date website for any additional changes to the text from print time. Check it out.

All other books pale by comparison. Harriet and Andrew (as I've come to know them on my trip) have written a book that surpasses all others on this fabulous gem of an Island. I only wish I knew about their other book about the Big Island before it was too late. The advice in this book is excellent, precise and funny (although a bit corny), and the layout is superb -- with color and pictures that bring Kauai to life even before you get there. One word of advice for the 4th edition however would be an alphabetical index of cities and locations that correspond to a grid on the large map in the inside back cover. The only remaining question for me is whether these two authors are married, engaged, or otherwise to eachother . . .

This book is a fabulous tavel tool. It is very easy to read and communicates to the average middle class traveler such as myself. We even found this book in Hotel rooms. Everyone of the recommedations we followed were right on the mark. I also have Frommers Hawaii and Fodors Hawaii, and neither of them compare. Where these other books were useful, this one really spoke to me. It is very light, fun and matter of fact. They don't mess around and they give you what you need to make your trip a wonderful experience. There are some terrific things in Kauai that I would have missed had it not been for this delightful book. I highly recommend it!

We who live here on Kauai are perhaps the best judges of guidebooks because we are constantly having visitors who want to know all sorts of things about the island. We review all of the guides as they come out so we can hand the most thorough to our visitors and not have to repeat ourselves a thousand times. Briefly, the series by the Donohughs was superb but they stopped after Hurricane Iniki. At that time we met the authors of the Ultimate Kauai Guidebook while they were researching their first edition, which was a little shaky, but they kept researching and from the second edition on have the best guidebook on Kauai available. The worst guidebook for Kauai is a tie between: y)Lenore Horowitz who comes here two weeks a year and subscribes at home to the Island paper, and z)the one by Christie Stilson who has never been to Kauai as far as anyone here knows but has Dona Early drop over from Maui from time to time. Avoid these two. The rest of the guidebooks at your local store or at amazon.com are somewhere in the middle.

Just got back and used the new 3rd edition. Steered me to some great places(and unfortunately he was correct about the rundown accommodations at the Pono Kai Resort), though it's a bit frustrating when the restaurants/resorts are not in the index nor are their addresses given! Also, if you are into hiking get a separate book; I found this one a bit sparse and confusing. But thanks to the guide, I found a great beach (Hideaways in Princeville--bring snorkeling equipment!) and the wonderful Air Kauai helicopter tour of the island. Oh, he forgets to warn you about the lousy interisland air carrier Aloha Airlines. They are the black smudge on a beautiful state.

The best book I've seen on Kauai, bar none. Wizard Publications has done this book up right, with full color photographs (expensive) and well thought out, detailed maps. My only criticism is about their overall graphic design, which is a little amateurish (but, hey, I'm a graphic designer). This book, however, is all about content, and there, it has a clear corner on the market. Can't wait until they get a Maui guide (*hint* *hint*).

This guidebook was recommended to us by the conceirge at our hotel -- and, it MADE the trip. Wonderful descriptions & bits of history, and, a great way to help us determine what not to miss! One of the "do-not-miss" spots has to be Queen's Bath . . . something we would have never experienced without this book! Thank you to the authors for helping us truly experience Kaua'i . . . we can NOT wait to return to the island!

This is truly the best guidebook for Kaua'i!! We took it everywhere with us and found the maps to be very accurate and easy to read. All of the reviews of restaurants and activities were right on the money. We were travelling with an infant and really appreciated the breakdown of activities and adventures sections. I strongly urge anyone travelling to the island to bring this guidebook with them!!!! It is indispensable!!!
