More About the Author

Douglas Adams created all the various and contradictory manifestations of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: radio, novels, TV, computer game, stage adaptations, comic book and bath towel. He lectured and broadcast around the world and was a patron of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and Save the Rhino International. Douglas Adams was born in Cambridge, UK and lived with his wife and daughter in Islington, London, before moving to Santa Barbara, California, where he died suddenly in 2001. After Douglas died the movie of Hitchhiker moved out of development hell into the clear uplands of production, using much of Douglas' original script and ideas. Douglas shares the writing credit for the movie with Karey Kirkpatrick.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly classic book about a man and a towel 10 Dec 2003
By Darren Simons TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
let me say two words… BUY IT! Okay, hopefully you’re still with me so I’ll continue. The Hitchhiker’s Guide consists of five stories plus a very short story which isn’t really worth the paper it’s written on (no loss however, there’s another 800 pages in the book to be entertained by).
The theme throughout the stories is the life of Arthur Dent, a relatively normal earthling, quite reserved and in many ways quintessentially english, a bit of a ditherer and someone who’s life will never really come to much. The books tell the story of how he met Ford Prefect (a non-earthling as it turned out) and embarked on a journey throughout the known (and often unknown) universes just before Earth got destroyed due to a council mix up about intergalactic roadworks. His guide along this journey is strangely enough the hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy, a book so detailed that it summarises earth in two words. Along the way he meets wonderful characters such as Zaphod Beeblebrox, Trillian, Slartibartfast and Marvin the miserable robot.
The stories that make up this book are quite distinct although they need to be read in the order they’re written to make that much sense (and even then a few bits seem odd). At times reading the book I felt the idea got a little bit tired and then I turned the page and found something I couldn’t help but laugh to myself about.
In terms of who this book appeals to, well certainly it helps if you’re a sci-fi fan, although one of the appeals of this book is that it seems to have such general appeal, so long as you have an appreciationo the english sense of humour and perhaps a vague understanding of cricket.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BOOK THAT CHANGED MY LIFE... 18 Jun 2004
Format:Paperback
A few years ago, I hated fiction books. The only ones I read were those prescribed at school. I tried several authors and could never finish a single book. Then a friend handed me The Hitch Hiker's guide to the galaxy to read as I was planning on staying in that night. I could not put it down. It's pure genius. I read the next four and then went on to read the Dirk Gently Books. Douglas Adams was a brilliant man!
You have to read this book - the rest will follow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great! 1 Jun 2006
Format:Leather Bound
This is a fairly nice edition: a tough padded hardback, printed on gilt-egded paper which one might normally expect to see on a bible. This is quite thin, however, and the print shows through slightly from behind each page which is not an altogether bad thing, since the five novels are comprising the hitch-hiker "trilogy" form a volume about two-and-a-half inches thick. Good travel reading, in other words.

(The "story," by the way, is a tale about Zaphod's youth, and is also printed in the sadly unfinished Dirk Gently novel " The Salmon of Doubt.")

The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy is an undisputed classic of modern literature, and this is its definative edition, wrapping up the many incarnations of the Guide. Adams himself states that it is the purpose of the book to "set the record straight, or at least, firmly crooked." This is an excellent book, and and printed in a very nice edition. At the price it's an absolute steal.

A Kid's Review
Format:Leather Bound
Where to start.

I have been a big fan of The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy since first listening to the radio series in 1985 (ish) courtesy of a cassette tape of a recording of the original two radio series (Fit The First to Twelth) my friends older brother had given him and he subsequently lent me. Over time I would come to own, lose, and forget where I put, various copies of books in the HHGTTG series (including those original tapes which were returned slightly dustier than when first lent 5 years later).

So to the book. Due to the continued popularity of Douglas Adams, and THHGTTG there have been many versions of the five novels published over the years, along with a few compilation sets of the first four books.

The Ultimate Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy however does attempt in Adams own words "To set the record straight, or at least, firmly crooked." and may differ slightly from the many incarnations of the Guide although reading this you will more than likely think of it as a more wholly definitive if not sometimes contradictory version of the series.

This edition has the look and feel of one of a old style book, with a nice thick black hard cover, and guilt edged paper which is thin enough to fit the whole five novels in quite compactly. THHGTTG has over the years not only become a classic as a series and also in it's indifidual parts, but also has seemingly never lost it's popularity, and this definitive edition will naturally satisfy fans of both Douglas Adams, THGTTG and sci-fi/comedy fans.

One or two reviewers have mentioned being able to see the text through the page, but it isn't really as bad as it sounds and is not a problem in the least, and does not affect the ability to clearly read what is on the page.

In addition to the five novels is quite a rarity I feel (although other reviewers may need to correct me on this), "Young Zaphod Plays It Safe" a all short story about Beeblebrox's youth.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy 17 April 2005
Format:Paperback
If you haven't read Douglas Adams, you've missed out on one of the greatest writers of modern times. I first read Hitchhikers at the age of 8 (a couple of years after it was first released) and although I couldn't fully appreciate the wit, humour and intelligence of the book, it was still one of the greatest stories I'd ever read. This was followed by 4 further books which completed the five in Adams 'trilogy' - all of which are contained in this book. Now, 20-odd years later, I still read them and find myself laughing out loud.
The first thing to say is that this book is not only for sci-fi addicts. I myself don't particularly enjoy science fiction, but the humour in this book keeps you hooked from page one. The characters are certainly strange, the settings out-of-this-world (literally!) and the adventures far-fetched to say the least, but the way that it is written means it appeals to practically everyone.
Adam's intelligence coupled with his wicked eye for comedy and parody makes for one of the most fantastic books of all time, one which you can read and re-read and never get tired of. If you enjoy Monty Python or 'The Comic Strip', or just fancy a book that you can't put down and will give you a laugh on every page - BUY THIS BOOK. It deserves ten stars at least.
Incidentally, once you've read it, try the Dirk Gently mysteries. Very different, but equally fantastic!
