Most Helpful Customer Reviews

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By S Bailey on 8 Jun 2012
This budget-priced 3 CD compilation presents an assortment of mainstream hip-hop and r&b recordings, which range from the mid-1980s to the late 2000s. Some big names from both fields are trumpeted on the unaesthetic sleeve-work: Fugees; Cypress Hill; Wu Tang Clan, and Aaliyah. But I found that this slightly misleadingly titled 4 hour 60 song collection left me with mixed feelings. I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of contemporary r&b cuts, with their overly smooth production techniques and sickly slick sentiments, that often left me bored or indifferent. Hearing the inclusion of grittier-sounding rap tracks - like Cypress Hill's 'Lick A Shot' and Run DMC's rock-y collaboration with Aerosmith 'Walk This Way' - managed to alleviate some of those negative feelings. Hearing old-skool hip-hop gems like Dimples D's charming 'Sucker DJ (I Will Survive)', and Cash Money & Marvelous's thumping 'The Mighty Hard Rocker', for the first time altered my mood further still. With their brash attitude and simple rhythms, they provided a welcoming antidote to the ersatz soul performances put forward by the likes of E17 and Beverley Knight.
