During his career John Williams has not only explored the basic classical literature for guitar, he has also expanded it by inspiring, commissioning and arranging music from different cultures and in different styles, thereby transform the instrument's repertoire. To celebrate this outstanding and ongoing recording career Sony Classical has released a 2 CD retrospective entitled John Williams: The Ultimate Guitar Collection. This thiry-nine track compilation includes key tracks from all John's recent releases including last year's El Diablo Suelto, a celebration of Venezualan guitar music, and 2001's Magic Box on which John joined forces with fellow musicians John Etheridge, Chris Laurence, Paul Clarvis and Richard Harvey to explore the continuing tradition of guitar music in Africa and Madagascar and 1997's The Black Decameron on which John performed music by the comtemporary Cuban composer Leo Brouwer. The Magic Box album also includes guest appearances by Francis Bebey and the African Children's Choir. Designed very much as a gateway into John's substantial recorded catalogue the new album inlcudes many of the great standards of the classical guitar repertoire including Albéniz' Asturias, Stanley Meyer's Cavatina from the film Deerhunter and the ever popular second movement from Joaquin Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranuez. More populist fare includes transcriptions for guitar and orchestra of the theme tunes from Schindler's List and The Godfather, by namesake John Williams and Nino Rota respectively, both taken from the ...Plays the Movies album released in 1997, the traditional tune El Condor Pasa and the anonymous Romance for Guitar and Orchestra. John is also represented as a composer on the new collection with the Aeolian Chant from The Guitarist.

John Williams is the most outstanding classical guitarist of our time. He has explored, extended and redefined the repertoire for the guitar and made many first class recordings. Unfortunately many of his recordings focus on particular genres and can therefore feel a bit intense.
But this collection is different as it covers a wide range of pieces and styles - a true "best of" and more like an extended private concert of all his best performances. Throughly enjoyable and recomended.

This is the most beautiful serene and relaxing classical guitar playing I have heard in a long time - but then it is John Williams! Money well worth spent and a must for all fans.

Terrific collection of guitar performances, covering most of the genres that John Williams can perform so well, including some real classics, eg Cavatina. Would make a good gift, or an introduction to classical guitar to someone who had not listened to it before. A perfect aid to contemplation, meditation or study.

Am I getting older & wiser.Yes & maybe. I'm usually into heavy screaming guitars but thought with his history of Sky and movie music I'd give this a go and very pleased I am too.Brilliant and 100% recommended.

If you like guitar music then you will enjoy the range of pieces and styles John Williams demonstrates here. It is a reminder, if one were needed, of what a great talent he is. Thoroughly enjoyed by all ages in the family and, given its length and variety, excellant value.

I have long been a fan of john willliams' music so I jumped at the chance to buy this as a gift for my father, I must say as it is a double album it was worth spending the money on it but some of the tracks are I think written for film so I was not used to the classical guitar pieces he is famed for however an enjoyable album but I'm sure I could have done better choosing the tracks more carefully, check the track list maybe before you buy it see if it is up to what you'd expect from a john williams double album.

Very pleased with my purchase. Heard one of the tracks on a radio programme and tried to buy the album from the local HMV Store but was told it was no longer available. However no problems with Amazon and I'm intending to purchase a further copy as a birthday present for my son who is a student of the guitar. So thank you very much for the addition to my CD collection.

John Williams Collection
This is a nice collection of some of John William's best work in one package. Maany people will have these songs on different albums but for those who don't, it's a great choice.

lovely to relax with
This is a lovely CD to put on and unwind listening to. The tracks are perfectly delivered as ever by John Williams and this is one of the best guitar CD's I've heard for a while.
