Reading the list of photo-credits at the back of this book is like reading the index in a "Who's Who in the world of Underwater Photography." There are colour photographs (though occasionally a map or diagram) on every single page and the standard of that photography is as good as it gets.

As far as the content is concerned, this is also top drawer. If, for whatever reason, you were faced with being limited to purchasing a single book on the subject of Sharks (and there are hundreds to choose from) then this book is likely to satisfy all your requirements.

Yes, there is a section on Shark Attack - but this is not over-dramatised to make the reader walk in fear of going near the water's edge - as is the case with so many books. Instead we have a perfectly balanced record of the Shark and their close cousins the Rays. The work is well laid out and, once read, gives the reader a complete and wide understanding of these incredible creatures - many species of which are now on the brink of extinction.

Altogether and excellent book and an essential addition to any scuba diver's library.

I have a fair few books regarding sharks but always keep adding more and I do recommend this one.

The book contains not only contains useful information on various sharks species, but also information of shark attacks, senses, locations etc.

The format is nicely presented and easy to understand and read, even with tired eyes.

And it's an interesting shape as well! Makes a difference from the usual shaped books!

Overall, it gets five stars because it's a great addition for people who know a fair bit about sharks and for beginners it's a great introduction to these creatures, introducing the vast variety of sharks without being bias per say.

All I can say is "wow." I've spent most of my weekends looking for the best shark books, and I've found it. This book is not only a definitive book for basic biology of the sharks, but also has bios on individual species and an entire section about how to dive with sharks safely.

I completely read this book from front to back and back to front about 1,5 years ago. I've really learned a lot about all the different kinds of sharks; the content is well written, well indicated & "easy-going". Now, 1,5 years later and whenever I watch a shark program on tv I can immediately & upfront tell what kind of shark we're dealing with. Plus all the biological features of the animal, ie. dorsal, caudal, pectoral fins...and the reason why a dorsal fin on a "Pelagic Shark" tends to be bigger/taller than on some other sharks, etc etc.. So, if you really want to "learn" something about sharks, then this book is a must! :)
Hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did. Interesting reading!

250 or so pages chocked full of information and beautiful photo's! Each species gets either one or two pages to itself, all with great photo's and then information regarding habitat, breeding etc. Very easy to use, this book is clear and informative. The book begins with the history of sharks and the relationship of humans to sharks and rays and the study of them, then there is a comprehensive field guide containing photo's and information. An invaluable guide to sharks and rays. It is aimed at amateurs but uses scientific/Latin terminology throughout and in no way dumbs down the subject matter.

I doubt anyone buys this book with a real interest in Rays, however there is more than enough inthe book on sharks to make the purchase well worth while.

Even better value are the second hand copies floating about - £2-3 can't be wrong for a fairly informative book.
