I hunted high and low for a book like this. I live in France, and the various manuals which came with the pool are in French techno-speak and pretty impenetrable. All I wanted was a simple manual which told me how to filter the pool, how to maintain the various chemical balances, how to use the pool blanket, and how often to do things. My first shot at a pool maintenance book was a fairly old tome from a California publisher. It turned out to be more an evangelistic tract than a handbook. By the time I'd read it, I was in no doubt that owning a pool was one of life's higher aspirations. As for what to do about it when you actually reached nirvana, the first book left me none the wiser. Terry Tamminen's Ultimate Guide To Pool Maintenance is a very different proposition. It lives up to its title. It is written at two levels. On the one hand, it is a perfectly comprehensible and comprehensive guide for first time owners like me. It answers all the questions I wanted to ask, and in a way that I could understand and act on. On the other hand it would be a good primer for a pool maintenance professional, who could crib from it convincingly in order to blind customers with science. (After you've read it, you will be fully armed against this kind of con.)
My only complaint is about the very first paragraph of the introduction, which lists a mere few of the Hollywood celebrities who have availed themselves of Terry Tamminen's pool services over the years. If you want your pool maintained in the same style as Dustin Hoffman, Madonna, Roy Orbison, Barbra Streisand and so on, this is definitely the book for you, though what the celebrity names have to do with anything is a mystery to me. Happily, if all you want is a clearly written mug's account of what to do with the monster in the back garden, it's still the right book.

I bought this book a while ago, when I acquired a house with a pool in France. I have since learned how to take care of my pool, but I have to say most of my knowledge has been acquired not from this book, but by laboriously hunting around on the internet. The author clearly has loads of experience with plaster pools in the US, but things seem to work rather differently with a typical liner pool here in France. The American names for many chemicals are different from those we use in British English, and the products and equipment commonly available here are rather different than those described in the book. The book gave no insight whatsoever into managing water chemistry with a salt chlorinator. Given how common they are now, that was very surprising, and a major omission, as the water chemistry does seem to behave very differently with a chlorinator installed. All in all, this book didn't really help me very much.

This is a really detailed book that may be a bit much for a normal pool owner. It has many sections including how to build a pool

This maintenance guide is far too simple in parts and try's to give buisness advice, overal not bad, but excessivly padded with not very relevant information. Read more
