When these first arrived, they had amazing quality. I didn't even need to turn the volume more than half the max volume and I was able to only hear the music which is good since I don't like hearing people talk in the background.

But as time progressed, I had to turn the volume louder for the full effect of the headphones.

And approximately a month ago, the wires became loose which is possibly due to shoving it inside a box most the time, which caused the left side of the headphones to lose all it's sound and due to bending etc, the wiring part at the bottom started to break and eventually did break.

It might just be mine or my ears, but it has got really good quality.

    Update: 4 Aug 2010.
It seems as if UE and Amazon have dropped the price in half. This price as of today is, in US$30 or the equivalent in UK$. This, I think is a good price for the value. Although there are structural issues I'd like to see corrected, it is worth about 3.5 stars.

    Original review, below**********

I waited some time to consider what I'd write about this product because I love technology and I was hoping against hope that this would far exceed my experiences with in-ear headphones, and especially concerning the price. I am being very, very generous when I give this product 2 stars because it just doesn't measure up to what it could be.

*Initial inspection and engineering question problem
**Sound quality as compared to the (supplied) Blackberry Wireless Headphone w/ speaker
    *** Cost vs. Benefit analysis
    ****Other uses
    *****Recap

*I'm a technology buff and I use various audio and video equipment in my work, so I'm fairly familiar with most of the contemporary improvements. But, as in everything else nowadays, everything has to be justified especially when considering price. Technology has to push the envelope. Period. I've owned various types of headphones from the traditional to the in-ear to the "d.j. style" to the clip-ear (ouch!) and by far the best headphones I've owned was the Sony MDR V600. I mention the MDR V600 because they're roughly the same cost as the headphones I'm presently reviewing and there are qualities about this headphone (which, by the way, is more than 15 years old) that Ultimate Ears should have capitalized on.

First, what I like about the Ultimate Ears MetroFi 170Vi-- aesthetically it is a beauty to look at.

I bought these on the strength of the reviews on the Apple Store website to replace a pair of standard iPhone earphones. And when I got them I was extremely happy with the sound quality. But the fit is horrible. They will not stay in my ears. I tried all the different silicone tips (which are called "soft," on the box, soft compared to rocks maybe?), I tried all the tricks to make them fit like pulling the top of your ear slightly to make them go into your ear. Nothing would work. If your move your head slightly, put any expression on your face and they fall out. But the worst part comes when you try and walk and use them; you can hear footstep amplified through the earphones and every piece of contact between the wire and your clothing. It ruins the music.
Really the sound quality is excellent and they literally block out all external sound. But the ergonomics are worse than putting cake into your ears and the horrible wire ruins the sound made by the rather good earphones.
(Ps, Yes this is the same review that's on the Apple Store page for these earphones. I though they were so bad I'd but the review in both places.)

I purchased these at the Apple store on the strength of the salesperson's recommendation. That was six months ago and I have not grown tired of them. The sound is simply superb with all types of music. Stunning clarity, depth and colour with a very impressive sound stage. I am a music fanatic and have spent a lot of money on audiophile-grade hi-fi components and loudspeakers. I travel a lot and would be lost without these phones while flying. The noise isolation is fantastic and the various sized silicone buds are super comfortable. I have worn these headphones on flights of up to 10 hours and my ears have never felt better. Disregard the other negative reviews. These headphones beat any pair of Shure headphones I've tried both for fit and fidelity. The included storage case is brilliant. Simply wind the thick flexi-cable around 2 fingers allowing the buds to dangle as you wind and pop the coil into the case. Remove and drop-dangle to unwind and you'll never have to untangle your phones cable again. I cannot over-praise the quality of this product. Oh, and they even double as an iPhone headset! Buy them - you will not be disappointed.
