The tracks span the period from his 1975 solo debut 'Nils Lofgren' through to the awesome 1997 'Acoustic Live'. If anything, the selection (and I think it was his own choice) tends to favour the softer side of his output and if you are a fan of his flash rock n roll guitar slinger reputation, you may be a little disappointed. The rockers are most notably the essential 'Keith Don't Go' and 'Cry Tough' - reminding you of the days when he used to play guitar and jump somersaults from a trampoline at The Hammersmith Odeon. His quieter and more lyrical side is represented by the graceful 'Shine Silently' and 'Girl in Motion'. In between there are 16 other well crafted and executed tracks showcasing his optimistic and uplifting approach to songwriting. The final acoustic 'No Mercy' is the only live cut - again maybe a quibble for those who know just how stunning Nils can be in front of an audience.
Some my find his lyrics a little naive and lacking the depth or range of his erstwhile employers Neil and Bruce. Certainly this set has very positive, upbeat and energetic feel running throughout it and if you've ever had the pleasure of catching him live you'll appreciate that they do capture the essence of what he's about. 'Across The Tracks' and 'Wonderland' both contain messages that I suspect are close to his heart. Music is hope, music is joy.
Twenty tracks cannot possibly please everyone and I hope that at some stage some enlightened soul puts together a box set of his career. But, if like me, your vinyl is shot and you are looking for a good summary of some of his highlights to play in the car on a long trip, this is well worth checking out. If you've only come across him by way of Neil, Bruce (or Ringo), this is a very good starting point.
This is an excellent introduction to Lofgren's work, containing a strong selection of tunes mostly from his 70's and early 80's albums. If you haven't heard Nils' work, treat yourself to this album and enjoy the rock'n'roll imagery of 'Cry Tough', the acoustic charm of 'Two By Two', and the exuberance of 'I Came To Dance'... And there's always 'Keith Don't Go', written when the Human Riff's imminent demise was predicted by most rock commentators. Keith Richards is still rocking, so is Nils Lofgren, and this is essential stuff.
