5.0 out of 5 stars Not just another gardening book, 10 Oct 2004
This review is from: The Ultimate Book of Small Gardens (Hardcover)
I was given this book when I got married and moved into a new house with my new wife - new house, new marriage, and new garden. Wow, a lot to deal with all at once. So many gardening books these days, especially those by the guys on TV seem to be all pictures and fluffery but this guy is different. There are lots of great pictures to show what you can do with a small space, but the text is full of really sensible advice on flowers and vegetables - he must have a tiny garden himself or he'd never had worked out so many clever solutions to the problems of small gardens.

I've become a bit cynical about celebrities and their gardening books but, for those of us who are not experts and only have a small space, this book is really useful. I'm going to order it for a friend who's getting married and moving to a new house next month. But I'd say if you want to liven up you're existing garden it's just as useful.

2.0 out of 5 stars Some nice ideas, but not enough technical detail, 29 Jun 2005
By
Gordon (Oxford, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Ultimate Book of Small Gardens (Hardcover)
I was given this book as a present by my parents-out-law, and have read it cover to cover. It's written in an engaging style, and covers some helpful topics for a novice gardener. I particularly liked some of the planting ideas, and the thoughts on making paths.

However, I felt that an experienced gardener would find the book somewhat pedestrian - and that a novice gardener would not find enough detail to give them confidence. The sections dealing with building paths etc are probably stronger than the more horticultural sections. Overall, there wasn't really much sense of how a small garden differed from a large garden, and I felt that narrowing the scope of the book to focus solely on design would probably have been sensible.

If novice gardeners are looking for an idiot guide, I'd strongly recommend Alan Titchmarsh's 'How to be a gardener' - I've found it readable, helpful and well-illustrated.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of original and practical ideas, 6 Oct 2008
By Christine Marchitello "bonsai2" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Ultimate Book of Small Gardens (Paperback)
This book is full of ideas for small gardens while keeping in mind the practical considerations this lack of space entails. I especially appreciated the section where the author defines the various types of small gardens.
