I am very found of Colin Baker's Doctor Who audioplays and think they are all of superior quality, but you've really got to forget about that when you listen to this.
This still in no way means this is bad, quite the contrary it's great fun to listen to, but you have to remember that it was based on a play that was rather light hearted in the first place. It's obviouly Doctor Who on it's most 'lets make something fun for the kids' level and the plot is therefor not very complicated. I'll admite it does have some tacky songs, but it's also got romance, adventure, space mercenaries, Cybermen and Daleks, so you just can't go wrong really.
It's probably not a story I'd listen to over and over again, but it is worth putting in any Doctor Who collection, especially if, like me, you regret the fact that you couldn't see it on stage in the first place.

- 5 stars for faithfully reproducing and adapting a 20-year old family-orientated ambitions stage play to audio. The songs are very good, one in particular sounding just like a contemporary-to-1989 pop song.
- 2 stars as an audio release in its own right as this is nowhere near the scripted quality and acting of a normal Colin Baker Big Finish audio as it was meant for stage.

I saw the Stageplay four times, once with Pertwee and it was hugely enjoyable to see Pertwee and Baker neither of whom where the Doctor at the time. One of the most impressive aspects was the laser tunnel. But it was nice to see the Daleks, Cybermen, David Banks etc.

Big Finish have accurately reproduced the play and it brings back fond memories. It also reminded me that my dislike for Zog still remains, but at least Big Finish did not try to make it more intelligent or remove it altogether. Do not expect the usual sophisticated Colin Baker drama that Big Finish have been releasing for nearly ten years in which Colin Baker's Doctor is truly excellent and been given the life it deserves.
