A vital tool for every artist or craftsperson, 6 Dec 2001
This review is from: Photo Impact 7.0 (CD-ROM)
Photoimpact is a very wise investment for artists of all kinds - new, experienced, young, old, amateur, professional. It can provide you with hours of creative joy every time you open the program.
I discovered this program through my interest in digital art. I began to notice that sites with fabulous graphics often recommended Photoimpact - usually in preference to Paint Shop Pro - sometimes in preference to Photoshop, the so-called graphics industry standard.
This product deserves all the superlatives bestowed upon it. It's no coincidence that it has won so many respected awards over the years.
I think the best way to describe what it does, and how, is this - it does everything you expect Photoshop to do, but in a fraction of the time, and in a fraction of the number of steps. It does more than Paint Shop Pro can, and to my mind has a much more logical, user-friendly interface.
You can make buttons, banners, rules and backgrounds - in a snap - all optimised to teeny gifs and jpeg files ready for the web. You can make your photos beautiful with one click - there's even a setting to smooth skin blemishes away! The program is a wonderful tool for the craftsperson, but a workhorse for the professional graphic artist, too. Even very advanced tasks, such as composite imaging and mask work are achieved quickly and give expert results every time.
This version boasts a wonderful new multi-print engine. I have a good quality colour printer and my family presumed they were looking at actual photographers proofs - the results are that good.
Also new in version seven is the remarkable Z merge tool. You get to make or combine impressive 3d images. I can't think of any other program that enables such complex processes to take place in milliseconds. There's no waiting around for graphics to render - it is instantaneous. Astonishing stuff.
The last version of Photoimpact was weak on colour accuracy, something that has been sorted out in this edition. So for me it's now perfect, and it deserves five stars. I'd give it six if I could!
There is a strong community behind the product, so support is readily available for all kinds of Photoimpact queries while you are learning. And you get to exchange professional tips once you have mastered the basics.
Friends, fun, opportunities for financial gain. What more could you want from a piece of software?
