With this book you get (nearly) what it says on the label. In this Book/CD package Lil' Rev takes you through a series of licks that you can add to your repertory when you are soloing on your instrument.

The structure of the book is excellent. It starts off with Blues licks (which form the bulk of the licks taught). Each Chapter presents you with a couple of pages of licks in a particular key (which are well illustrated on the accompanying CD) then the author gives you a backing track in that key to improvise over, using the licks you have just learned. The book continues this pattern with the common (and useful) keys of A, Bb, C, D, E, F & G.

After introducing a couple of more Jazzy blues licks (the only real reference to Jazz licks in the book - so Jazz enthusiasts might want to bear that in mind - that's why there is a "nearly" in my title). The author repeats the formula from the first half of the book and presents two pages of Country licks each for the keys of C & G followed by a backing track section for each. Then he finishes off with a few pages of Bluegrass licks.

Of course, many of the licks taught can be adapted from the keys you learn them in to other keys by simply transposing them. So, after learning all of the blues licks in different keys and trying them out in other keys, your repertory of solid recognizable blues licks will have soared. Combine them with tricks you might already know and you'll start sounding like the BB King of the Uke in no time!

Indeed, as the Uke shares the same interval tuning as a guitar, then many licks you learn for the Uke with this book can be transferred over to the guitar, quite easily. So I felt this was a "two for one" learning experience!

This book is incredible. It is so simple to follow. No tab is longer than 24 notes. Each key is catered for with its own specific licks. These can be put together in a modular system, so you can create your own solos. It comes with a CD, to play along with. I wish I had purchased this years ago.

Disappointing for me as I was hoping for a simple set of licks. Reader needs to read Music and understand theory of music. Not for the beginner!

I'm an experienced guitar player who has recently started dabbling with the ukulele. My guitar experience meant that I was able to get going quite quickly with the uke but I wanted something to help bring a few more ideas to the party and help me develop further. This book didn't really do it for me. The licks are very simplistic and I quickly found I wasn't getting anything out of them. There is no sense of development as you progress through the book. The lick on the last page isn't, (in my opinion), that much more complex than the lick on the first, This book is now gathering dust on my bookshelf and I have bought Chad Johnson's ukulele aerobics book - that is much more in line with what I was looking for.

This is interesting, fun, and quite different to any previous tutorial that I have read. It certainly expands the range of sounds you can expect to produce on a ukulele, though of course, it is down to dedication, practice, and application of the individual as to how much he or she can achieve. In my case, see me in two years time to find out! Surely, even just a casual ukulele learner will have a ball trying out some of the licks in the accompanying CD tutorial. Enjoy!

Nice little addition to the uke library. If, like me, you are new to playing, is a nice introduction to building your repertoire.
