The structure of the book is excellent. It starts off with Blues licks (which form the bulk of the licks taught). Each Chapter presents you with a couple of pages of licks in a particular key (which are well illustrated on the accompanying CD) then the author gives you a backing track in that key to improvise over, using the licks you have just learned. The book continues this pattern with the common (and useful) keys of A, Bb, C, D, E, F & G.
After introducing a couple of more Jazzy blues licks (the only real reference to Jazz licks in the book - so Jazz enthusiasts might want to bear that in mind - that's why there is a "nearly" in my title). The author repeats the formula from the first half of the book and presents two pages of Country licks each for the keys of C & G followed by a backing track section for each. Then he finishes off with a few pages of Bluegrass licks.
Of course, many of the licks taught can be adapted from the keys you learn them in to other keys by simply transposing them. So, after learning all of the blues licks in different keys and trying them out in other keys, your repertory of solid recognizable blues licks will have soared. Combine them with tricks you might already know and you'll start sounding like the BB King of the Uke in no time!
Indeed, as the Uke shares the same interval tuning as a guitar, then many licks you learn for the Uke with this book can be transferred over to the guitar, quite easily. So I felt this was a "two for one" learning experience!Read more ›
