Don't expect anything you recognise in this one!

I bought this CD for my sister as her ... ahem ... wedding present ... couldn't resist the bad pun I'm afraid. I'm a big weddoes fan and have the vinyl version of this, and used to play a track at the end of the night in an indy club, it always went down well and inspired a bit or drunken russian cossak dancing.

If you're a fan of world music and willing to open your ears a little, this is a must, a fantastic rendition of Ukranian folk songs. It performs a similar transformation to that which the wolftones performed on irish folk songs, making them into so much more and taking them some place else - although the weddoes do it so much better.

The tempo is nothing less than frantic and the whole thing really stomps. A couple of tracks from this album really gets the party going.

What on Earth is going on here? This in theory isn't the Weddoes at all. You can hear Mr. Gedge a couple of times and his unmistakable guitar cuts through a few times but otherwise this is the Ukrainians. Hearing their take on 'Those Were The Days' has to be heard to be believed. The songs all sound a bit samey (never a criticism levelled at The Wedding Present at all!) and it can grate after a while if you're not used to this kind of thing. But dip in every once in a while and you'll be rewarded kindly.
