5.0 out of 5 stars Huge! Great... 14 Jan 2008
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This product is truly great, has basically any Ukrainian word you can think of... even many slang words. Keep in mind, this book is only Ukrainian - English. It does NOT include English - Ukrainian. I purchased it without realizing this. Still, a valuable asset, especially if needing specific Ukrainian words.

Also, keep in mind that the book is huge. About 8 inches tall, 6 inches wide, and 2 1/2 inches thick. It ways a good 4 or 5 pounds... many words.

I have owned and used this book for a few years, and I find it to be an excellent resource. It is extensive and scholarly; there is nothing else quite like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource 1 May 2012
By Jewhen Cybulia - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I have owned this book for a while now and find it very useful.

However, I feel that the prospective buyers should realize that the dictionary does not accurately reflect the modern Ukrainian as it is used in the Ukraine. It is close enough though. If I met someone who would speak Ukrainian as used in the dictionary, I would immediately recognize that they are from the Ukrainian diaspora. Some would say this language sounds funny, but I personally think it sounds really cool! Since the Ukrainian language has been contaminated with Russian influence, the Ukrainian in this dictionary sounds more pure to a Ukrainian speaker.

I am a native Ukrainian speaker and use this dictionary specifically to learn how the Ukrainian is spoken in Canada and the U.S. and enrich my vocabulary, so I can occasionally use some of the cool words from the dictionary to impress others.

If you are trying to seriously learn the Ukrainian as used in the modern Ukraine, you will be better off getting a dictionary published in the Ukraine, but this one will also do the job and will definitely be useful for those with special interest in the Ukrainian language.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 20th Century Ukraininan 18 Sep 2013
By Peter J. Piaseckyj - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I am translating my father's memories. He was well educated and his Ukrainian is perfect but his language is 20th century Ukrainian.

This is the language of Ukraine before the Russification in Soviet Ukraine and Stalin's Ukrainian Grammar of the 1930's with his linguacidal program for melting the Ukrainian language " into that of the fraternal twin Russian".

The other dictionary that helps is the 11 volume Ukrainian language explanatory dictionary of the Ukrainian language, Naukova Dumka, Kyiv,1970-1980. This dictionary can be accessed on the internet in it's electronic form.

I wish both of these dictionaries were combined in to a Ukrainian-English and English-Ukrainian and reprinted.

This would be for Ukrainian a linguistic Bacchanalia.
