Product Description

Product Description

In case you have been bitten by the watch bug and speak German, this is an excellent guide that will be really worthwhile to purchase prior to diving deeper into the new found (and expensive) hobby. The author definitely understands the emotional aspect of watch collecting and makes it a prominent feature of his advice but at the same time tries to introduce some sound 'investment' aspects into the fray.

The book is perhas stereotypically German in being fairly thorough and not only covering generalities but going into considerable detail on matters which may not strike you as so relevant, when starting with a new hobby, but which will save you lots of trouble and money later on.

The book first covers the hobby as such, gives some pretty graphic disclaimers of what happens if one overdoes it and how to go about it generally (i.e. constant flipping of your collection is likely to have a negative financial impact).

Following this the author introduces some of the most prominent watch brands, which in addition to having many admirers are also likely to hold their value well, or increase in value over time (sometimes generations). The usual suspects (Audemars Piguet, Breguet, Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, A. Lange & Söhne, Glashütte Original, Rolex, Breitling, IWC...) are all there, as are some smaller but by no means insignificant brands that are likely to be both a joy to own and a sound investment.

For each brand a company history, some significant pieces (including pictures) and a reasoning for the assessment are given, ending in a points based system, which allows a comparison.

Where the book really scores, though is in the next sections, which cover all aspects of buying, selling, maintaining, insuring and storing watches.
