Biography

Far more than on any of the Drive-By Truckers’ previous albums, Go-Go Boots rises like smoke from the old Muscle Shoals country-and-soul sound. Having recorded with Bettye LaVette and Booker T. Jones, and having spent a lifetime listening to classic soul albums by Bobby Womack, Tony Joe White, and especially Eddie Hinton, it was inevitable that the Truckers eventually produce this ... 3.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Do DBT Justice 12 Aug 2011
By MrSavoie2U - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Ok, so for a casual this is a good start, but really it doesn't do the group justice. They've never really had any "hits", but have more than enough quality tracks that aren't on this collection. Patterson Hood put this collection together for New West, who wanted a single disc worth of material, so it's not the groups fault so many key tracks are missing. This should have been a two disc collection in order to give newcomers a true taste of the finest moments the band has to offer. Tracks like "Goddamn Lonely Love", "72(This Highway's Mean)", "Space City", and "Guitar Man Upstairs" to name a few. So if you're just getting into DBT this is a decent starting point, though I would go with Southern Rock Opera, Dirty South, and or Decoration Day first. The band's hat trick.

4.0 out of 5 stars DBT always a Hit 2 Aug 2011
By R. Allison - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
DBT is an excellent, unique band who weave their stories throughout an album or show. Even with a great catalog, definitely not a "singles" band ... you need to hear a few tunes at a time to really get down into the dirty south. I've bought greatest hit releases many times to check out a band and hopefully some will be rewarded by doing the same here.

Their individual albums are far more interesting than a greatest hits could ever be. Besides, it's lame to pick out the one song that didn't make it on a Hits release out of so many. But still ... no Women Without Whiskey? Probably an attempt to balance out the albums and/or songwriters, but c'mon boys, go with your strength and there's nothing stronger than that gem. I'm going to put it on right now and get over it.

DBT is always in my rotation and I'll check them out anytime they hit So Cal. Still miss the triple guitar and songwriting trio, but times change and now Jason is giving it up with the 300 Unit. Enjoy the rock show and make sure Women Without Whiskey makes it onto YOUR mix.

5.0 out of 5 stars One greatest hits worth buying! 2 Aug 2011
By Lou - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Drive-By Truckers is one of the few musical bands that can't do anything wrong. This CD is proof. I will admit that buying their individual albums is better only because each follows a theme. But if you are going to just pick out songs here & there, this is a solid representation of what they've done and what they can still do.
Yes, a few songs are missing, but it's mostly personal preference. What's on here simply ROCKS! Tunes like "Let There Be Rock" and "Sink Hole" put an imprint on what this band is about. Hood, Cooley, and all the rest are talented, smart, and appeal to their growing fan base. If you've never listened (or heard of) to Drive-By Truckers before, this is a great starting point. And after you hear this, you'll be likely to explore some of their entire albums to see what makes them go.
It's a CD well worth owning.
