Product Description

Somebody has decided to celebrate New Year's Eve 2011 in a very twisted way - by dressing as a nun and brutally dismembering a little old lady. Lt. Arribas, a bald, toothless, one-eyed and lonely detective is called in on the case. His investigations lead him to the door of renegade Doctor Werner, who tells him the strange story of "The Beautiful Otero" the most beautiful woman in the world (former Spanish model Galera) who, before Werner s miraculous surgery, was the ugliest woman in the world! But Lt. Arribas now has a new problem - he is falling in love at a distance with his principle suspect who, because of her traumatic childhood, is planning her vengeance - to sabotage the Miss Spain Beauty Pageant, leaving behind her a trail of dead beauty queens. A super-slick science fiction thriller with a dark and bizarre finale.

5.0 out of 5 stars Futuristic Spanish horror morality tale, 30 July 2008

This review is from: The Ugliest Woman In The World [1999] [DVD] (DVD)
I was attracted to this movie because my knowledge of Spanish cinema is limited - to say the least! I had seen those Blind dead films years ago so when I came across Ugliest woman I thought I'd give it a try. Good decision! Basically a futuristic story with elements of horror plus a moral - it was made in 1999 but set about 10 years later. An incredibly ugly baby is placed in a convent & during her teens she is nastily attacked by loutish youths who unfortunately don't get their comeuppance. By New Years Eve of 2011 the first of a series of murders take place. A balding, one eyed, toothless detective begins to investigate. Soon we meet Lola, played by the drop dead gorgeous Elia Galera, who couldn't possibly be involved, or could she? Police enquiries lead to old Doctor Werner who relates a story about a patient regarded as the ugliest woman in the world who was transformed by his surgical skills into the most beautiful in the world. Lt. Arribas, the detective, now suspects Lola of being a murderess but for what motive? Events race along to the finale which takes place at a Beauty Pageant which will see the new Miss Spain crowned. With so many lovely ladies involved who will be the winner, could one of them be the murderer & what is going to happen? You'll have to see the film to experience the truly bizarre climax plus the rather poignant final scenes.
The second best performance in the film, after Elia, is from Javivi as the detective's sidekick - he conveys a range of emotions merely with subtle understated facial expressions: there are a bunch of somewhat oafish cops who don't help the investigation much but seem to be around for a bit of comic relief. But it's Miss Galera who steals the show - she convinces us of the fact that she has never really been loved and undergoes character (and appearance!) changes dramatically in the last reel!
There's a bonus `making of' doco + trailers, TV spots & a stills gallery. Spoken dialogue is Spanish but sub titles are perfectly clear as is the crisp picture quality. Miguel Barden's direction is fluid & imaginative and anyone who fancies something a bit different for entertainment should definitely give this film a spin. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Are you really looking for inner beauty?, 9 Aug 2008

This review is from: The Ugliest Woman In The World [1999] [DVD] (DVD)
A comedy horror set in a future republican Spain with the comedy aspect largely provided by Spain's version of the Keystone cops as they try to solve a series of murders that, unbelievably, no one has linked together despite the identity of the victims.
It's a clever horror story though and one that does not rely on a visceral use of blood to get its point across. You do feel sympathy for the villain of the piece, a disfigured woman, as the details of her background, and the mistreatment which goes from childhood teasing to being raped are revealed as the story develops. It's odd she did not seek revenge on her childhood tormentors though but this film does not always take the obvious approach.
Elia Galera is pretty good considering this was her first lead acting role and the two main police roles are well handled by Roberto Alvarez as the sympathetic inspector Arribas and Javivi as his side-kick the stumbling but well meaning Sergeant Pelayo.
It's full of great background characters throughout but one small query, where exactly is Victoria Abril here?.
It's a morality tale that's well worth a view if you do not mind sub-titled movies.

Anyone toying with purchasing Ugliest Woman in the World as advertised here because the listing states the brilliant Victoria Abril, Sergi Lopez and Javier Bardem star in the film might want to do the research I didn't before a blind buy for neither of the three actors has any role in this movie.
