4.0 out of 5 stars Spare, economical collection, 17 Sep 2009
By E. Shaw "Kokoschka's_cat" (Leeds, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This spare, economical, collection of short stories is a revelation of versatility and creativity. Moving from a village in Wales to the Malayan jungle, there is the sense that any subject would not be beyond the ability of this writer.
Particularly enlivening here is the story of the Welsh slate miners of a generation ago. With both comical and tragic overtones, a strike, for one miner and his family, has cathartic results when English soldiers are drafted in to keep order in the town.

Perhaps the most vividly drawn is the story of Lee and Mr Ming, owner of the Savoy Cinema in a small Malayan village at the outbreak of the Communist insurgency at the end of World War II. Lee is an artist - he paints the posters for the films each week, using the faces of his friends, families, and the Communist cell that meets each week in the cinema to talk about revolution. When the breakout of fighting occurs, Lee is drawn with Mr Ming and his compatriots into the local Communist militia, and their trials in the jungle begin.

Peter Ho Davies also writes about childhood terrors in the English countryside, love and friendship among the unemployed of the Thatcher years and what it is like to work on a phone line for potential suicides, very similar to Chad Varah's Samaritans organisation. This is a satisfying and fascinating collection of stories.
