Having enviously looked on at the Wacom Cintiq range and having to resolve myself to not being able to have the experience of drawing live onto your tablet, I was totally blown away at the offer of a 19 inch monitor tablet at what had to be a ridiculously low price. There had to be something wrong with it. After reading through the similarly surprised remarks about price to what you get from our American counterparts, I decided to take the plunge.

Out of the box:
Ugee really have pulled the stops out when it comes to what you get for your money, natually you have the monitor tablet but they supply all the cables for VGA use (and, I suspect, the cables for use with a Mac as well), the USB connectors, as well as 2 pairs of gloves (so you can lean against the monitor without leaving greasy marks), a cleaning cloth and a lipstick brush (for removing particles safely).

The pen allegedly uses an AAA battery, but unscrewing it reveals a rather vulnerable wire, so I did not mess with it, it worked for me straight out of the box. It also has a pen holder, which also carries spare nibs in the bottom (you have to twist it open). The pen is lighter than my old Wacom pen, but also feels a bit cheaper, honestly, that isn't a deal breaker.

I could go on, but I'm sure you just want me to get on telling you why I've given it 5 stars, so here's why:

Pros

1. The size to money ratio - you are paying a third of the price of a cintiq for 3 times the size.
2. The stand - goes from upright to flat, which allows you to use it like an artist's drawing board, or a monitor or a flat paper surface, whatever suits your style. Full marks to Ugee for this, it works great!

I'd like to first start off by saying that I searched far and wide before deciding which interactive tablet to get. Since I'm a student, there's no way I can afford a cintiq right now! So I needed to make sure that it if I was going to get something affordable it needed to be as good as it says.

Since I want to be an illustrator, I wanted to expand my abilities with digital art, and while I have a simple Wacom tablet, which I love to pieces, I really wanted to try the monitor display ones out.

It was a finicky setting up, unfortunately I had to uninstall my Wacom driver for this driver to successfully work. I haven't actually tried installing it back on yet so I don't know what then out come is on that front. However, after the set up, I opened up photoshop, and paint tool, and I was blown away. The pen pressure for me is brilliant, I feel like I'm drawing like normal!

It's honestly a brilliant buy if you're not willing to pay out over £1,000. I would really like a cintiq one day, but honestly this is probably just as good.

It's great way to get started if you want to explore digital art, I find it gives you a lot more freedom and flexibility when drawing.

I had some problems with delivery, it was a fast arrival, but didn't arrive on the day it said it would, it was a day late which doesn't seem so bad - but it was a pain in the butt considering I was tracking it and had someone waiting at home for it all day while I had to go to college and it never showed up.

But this tablet quickly made up for that, I'm incredibly impressed considering. I know you have to be careful with products like these sometimes but once you've got the installation out of the way the rest is your journey to creativity!

My tablet arrived very quickly and I was informed of the delivery in advance. I had a bit of an issue initially with getting the right connection as I was connecting to a laptop with USB or HDMI connections only. I had hoped that a DVI to HDMI adapter would work alongside the USB to USB connection but it didn't - it worked only as a traditional tablet. After a speedy response from Emgreat I set about finding a VGA to USB connector which wasn't the easiest thing to find on the high street (I suppose I could have waited another 5 or more days to get one from Amazon but I really wanted to get going!) I managed to get a multiple connection adapter/converter from a well known high street supplier. It connected VGA to USB and once all the software was installed the display was picked up by my laptop. If you are buying to use with a laptop you might want to order an adapter/converter at the same time. Mine is a multi adapter/converter for adding multiple additional screens and has software you need to install to make it all work. You might think that the above is too much hassle but I'd say at £1200 - £1800 for a similar sized Cintiq then it is undoubtedly a bargain. I had previously been looking at a Cintiq at more than £600 and realise now that it would have been totally useless for my needs!

It feels a really solid unit with heavy duty frame, very low centre of gravity so you won't accidentally knock it over and sturdy rubber feet, though it is light enough to move around easily.

I have only had a couple of hours or so to play with it but am delighted so far with the quality and clarity of the display and the smoothness of the drawing & node editing. I have already edited some pictures and created a couple of embroidery designs.Read more ›
