I have been using this tablet for a few weeks now and feel able to comment on it.

The Ugee 8 ExpressKey graphics tablet enables the user to paint, write or draw as they would naturally using pen/pencil and paper. So you can now easily digitise your hand drawn images, edit and touch up photographs on your computer. Using this you can also annotate or sign digital documents easily and clearly.

I used this tablet on a ACER laptop running windows 7 with Adobe Photoshop and the painting, sketch open source software Krita.

in the box -

- The tablet 10 x 6 inches drawing screen with USB cable attachment
- Drivers/applications/demo CD
- Pen (approx 5 inches long requires a AAA battery) and holder plus 8 spare pen nibs

The tablet itself is very well made and has a good build quality about it. It feels solid and robust. The left side with the Hot keys/F keys is plastic the rest of the tablet feels metallic in build. It connects to your computer via a built in USB cable, that's it! The graphics tablet pen is comfortable to hold and has a rocker type button on one side.

In use -

After downloading the drivers from the supplied CD my main computer a Samsung notebook (what I am writing this on now) just would not let me sign in with my user password at all upon rebooting. I sorted that out and then tried to download the drivers from the UGEE site. Again I couldn't sign into my computer! Weird. So I cranked up the old warhorse Acer laptop running windows 7 and using the CD installed the drivers - all good! Why the Samsung was not playing I don't know?

So, after much ado I managed to get the tablet up and running on the Acer.

The tablet runs like a dream! Really user friendly and simple to use.

I had no DVD drive on my iMac to install the driver software but this was easily resolved by visiting UGEE website where drivers can be downloaded. Installing the driver was painless and the tablet worked immediately after plugging it in. 'Physical' buttons down left hand side and 'hot cell' buttons across top of tablet all behaved as expected.

Sensitivity and accuracy feels good and best of all, the working area of the tablet is a great size. It's this feature that makes the UGEE so attractive at this price point - a large area for using the supplied pen means that you can be accurate with fine details.

I had trouble finding the settings control panel on my Mac - I expected them to be in the System Preferences, but they're not there. Finally found them in the Applications folder in a directory called 'PenTabletSetting' which was easily missed (there's no documentation to tell you the location of this).

Once I'd found the settings, it was really easy to reassign the button and 'hot cells' to whatever functions I wanted. Pressure sensitivity on the pen is very good. Lovely to work with in Photoshop.

Build of the tablet doesn't feet quite as good as my Wacom Bamboo - particularly the left hand edge where the button have a 'plasticy' feel and the buttons are a little wobbly. The main working area is fine, though. The pen feels comfortable in the hand - build quality of the pen is good.

This seems like very good value to me.

The item arrived unexpectedly within 3 days of ordering on a Sunday which was nice. I opened the box and the packaging was terrible, I am sure this item has been returned as all the packaging, cellophane ect had been removed and stuck back on badly with air bubbles and there was dust and scratches on the tablet. I wouldn't mind this if it worked but because of this when I installed the tablet I thought it wasn't working, in the Control Panel of the hardware there is a pen sensitivity test, could I make a mark? NO! well not for a few hours anyway, although the pen was responding as a mouse would, but not very responsive, I couldn't get the pen to draw at all, UNTIL, after hours and by accident I tilted the pen to a sharp angle of about 45 degrees and low and behold it made a mark in the pen test area, the problem is I DO NOT NATURALLY HOLD A PEN AT SUCH A SHARP 45 DEGREE ANGLE, I hold a pen 90 degrees upright to the drawing medium/tablet, being an artist I didn't buy the tablet to play with but to do serious work, I had an old Wacom Graphire tablet but having upgraded my pc it cost more to buy serial ports to usb conversions than it did to buy this new tablet which had great reviews. The tablet itself is a nice item but not the quality I expected, compared to my old Wacom it is cheap plastic. I have used it with a few paint programs and the zoom out/in hot keys have no effect (perhaps I need to customise them or something but that is a reason I bought this to quickly zoom for detailed work rather than switch to a mouse simply to magnify.Read more ›
